Munich - BMW has launched the second generation of the 1-Series compact range with a sportier look, several new extras and more fuel efficient engines than the predecessor model.
All the petrol and diesel engines have revised turbos and additional fuel-saving technology with an output ranging from 85 kW/116 hp in the 116d to 125 kW/170 hp in the BMW 118i.
Consumption for the BMW 116d is listed at between 4.3-4.5 litres/100 kilometres with a carbon dioxide emission figure at between 114-117 grammes per kilometre. For the 118i consumption is put at 5.8-5.9 litres/100 kilometres with CO2 emissions at 134-137 g/km.
BMW claims that the new 1-Series is the first car in its segment with optional eight-speed automatic transmission and Automatic Start/Stop function in both manual and automatic transmissions.
Slightly bigger than the predecessor model, the new 1-Series offers more legroom with the luggage compartment expanded from 330 to 360 litres. Storage can be expanded to 1,200 litres with the rear seats folded down.
Optional driver assistance systems include adaptive headlights, a lane departure warning system, internet access, and increased smartphone and music player integration.
