Jun 8, 2011, 3:07 GMT
Tokyo - Toyota is apparently going ahead with plans to bring the Celica successor, the FT-86 sportscar, to the road next year. Several spy shots reveal a near-production test version.
A concept study of the two-door sports car was first unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2009, with a slightly redesigned version making its appearance at this year's Geneva and New York motor shows.
Subaru is supplying the all-wheel drive platform and engine with, an output of 200 horsepower and coupled to a six-gear transmission.
With a length of 4.25 metres, the new Toyota Celica will be about as long as a VW Golf with a low-slung sports car height of only 1.27 metres. Apart from a Toyota version running under the Celica label, a Subaru version called Scion is headed for the United States.
Pricing is expected to be around 27,000 euros (38,800 dollars) on the European market which would be significantly cheaper than a Lotus Elise, which sells at around 34,450 euros (49,625 dollars).
