Slashing your fuel costs by converting to LPG
Jun 8, 2011, 3:06 GMT
Hamburg - Converting your petrol-driven car to LPG-drive (liquified petroleum gas) could slash your fuel costs by half - or even more in some countries, depending on taxation.
Only petrol-driven vehicles can be converted to LPG. The car can be driven in both petrol and LPG-mode and a good network of filling stations for LPG is meanwhile available in most European countries.
However, the rather costly conversion investment, which varies between 1,800 and 3,500 euros (2,600 dollars to 5,042 dollars) only makes itself felt if you plan to keep your car for a longer period and travel between 25,000 and 30,000 kilometres annually.
In addition, some LPG installations require regular service costs which has to be added to the equation.
Whether a conversion is an investment worth considering can be calculated according to a simple formula:
Conversion costs x 100 Consumption of litre/100 km petrol x litre price of petrol Consumption of litre/100 LPG x litre price
Then calculate the distance you travel annually and you will know whether the conversion is a good investment.
