New York - Volkswagen has given the go-ahead for the production of an exclusive four-door 'family version' of the Bugatti Galibier that is expected to sell for in excess of one million euros (1.4 million dollars), according to a report by the financial news wire Bloomberg.
Quoting company sources, the report said the 1,000-horsepower super car would be built at the earliest in 2013 at the Bugatti factory in Molsheim, France. The 16-cylinder power unit would be similar to that of the Coupe Veyron, with a top speed of over 400 km/h.
The concept of the Galibier, presented in 2009, takes some design cues from the 1938 Bugatti 57 Atlantic with a twin-foldable bonnet that, however, in this case opens and closes electronically.
Both the chassis and body of the Galibier are made of carbon fibre, with the exception of the wings and doors which are polished aluminum. Emphasizing elegant simplicity, the interior features a large oval dashboard dominated by just two instruments, a power meter and a speedometer. A Tourbillon clock by Parmigiani and a television monitor are detachable.
