Turkey plans world's biggest car showroom
Jun 16, 2010, 12:22 GMT
Istanbul - Turkey is planning to build what is billed as the world's biggest car showroom on a greenfield site near the city of Istanbul.
Autopia, as it will be called, will cover 200,000 square metres on five floors each with a headroom of six metres and boast 56 restaurants and cafes, say the project leaders, the construction firm of Guel and Kelesoglu. There will 54 other retail outlets along with 24 banks and 12 cash machines.
A range of insurance companies will offer instant legal cover for those who want to drive home in a newly-purchased car.
Customers interested in buying one of the vehicles on display will be able to put the car through its paces on an in-house test track located on the roof of the complex which will be open 365 days a year. Total investment has been put at 180 million dollars with an opening date pencilled in for December 31, 2011.
Turkey is not exactly a centre of automotive activity and has no home-grown car industry. Around 600,000 cars were sold there in 2009, not many for a country of 72 million people.
