EXTRA: GM's first plug-in hybrid Volt rolls off production line
Apr 2, 2010, 5:38 GMT
Washington - The first Chevy Volt, a plug-in hybrid that could define the future of US carmaker General Motors, has rolled off the factory production line, the manufacturer said Thursday.
The first drive-ready vehicle comes as General Motors Co prepares to begin mass production of the Volt towards the end of this year at a plant in Detroit, Michigan.
The Volt is powered by an electric motor with a range of about 64 kilometres, after which a petrol motor kicks in that extends its range by nearly 500 kilometres.
The pre-production version is designed to iron out potential problems in the manufacturing process. GM has yet to set a retail price for the car.
GM's Volt is part of a wider trend in the industry towards petrol- electric hybrids and other greener vehicles. Japanese maker Nissan will later this year begin selling its all-electric Leaf model.
