Hamburg - The cabin air filter that prevents substances such as pollen, dust and exhaust gases from entering the car interior should be replaced at least once a year, according to the Auto Club Europe (ACE).
Cabin air filters are often overlooked during servicing but are important for the functioning of the car's ventilation and air conditioning system, according to the ACE.
Dirt in an old filter provides the ideal breeding ground for bacteria and mould during damp weather conditions, posing a health risk to the driver and passengers, the automobile association warns.
Most of the filters are found beneath a panel under the bonnet or under the dashboard on the passenger side of the vehicle and can be easily replaced by the driver. However, the user manual should be consulted to avoid inserting it upside down.
There are two types of filters, according to the ACE. Basic filters trap dust, pollen and diesel particles while those fitted with an activated carbon layer also remove unpleasant smells, ozone and industrial emissions.
