Wolfsburg, Germany - Volkswagen is planning to produce a car with a fuel consumption of only one litre per 100 km by the year 2009, according to German press reports.
The AUTOStrassenverkehr magazine reports the car, fitted with a diesel engine, would have a weight of only 290 kilogrammes with a single passenger seat situated behind the driver.
It is based on a prototype that was unveiled by VW in 2002 and used by VW board chairman Ferdinand Piech to travel to a shareholder meeting in Hamburg, the report said.
The prototype was fitted with a 22 kW/30 hp diesel motor.
A VW spokesman refused to confirm the report but said the company was working continuously on fuel-saving measures.
