Hamburg - Audi is planning to build its new A1 model according to the Shooting Brake concept with a mixture of station wagon and coupe styling elements, Germany's Auto Bild newspaper reports.
In competing against the BMW 1-Series and MINI the design of the new A1 is more 'bullish' with extra-big wheels, wide rims, narrow roofline and square shapped wheels arches inherited from the 1980s sports Quattro.
An Audi spokesman in Ingolstadt, Germany, refused to comment on the report. However, company sources confirmed that the car maker is planning an AI for the period 2009-2010 positioned below the A3 compact range.
A final decision had not been made on the design and technology which was still speculation, sources said.
Auto Bild said the car maker was planning two 1.4 litre petrol engines of 65 and 150 hp. Two diesel engines fitted with Common-Rail technology with an output of 70 and 105 hp were also in the planning with the price for the basic model in the range of 16,000 euros (20,700 dollars).
