Stuttgart, Germany - Mercedes-Benz has introduced a semi- automatic braking system in the new S-Class and CL model, the manufacturer has announced.
From September the models available in Germany will have the additional braking assistant incorporated into the Pre-Safe safety system.
When the driver is heading in the direction of an obstacle, he/she is warned by an optical and sound signal. If the brake pedal is pressed, the system calculates the optimum brake pressure reducing the braking path.
New, according to Mercedes is the reaction of the car, should the driver not react after the third warning signal. The system then activates 40 per cent of the maximum braking power, giving the driver another powerful signal, according to Christian Frueh, who is responsible for the development of the assistance systems at Mercedes in Stuttgart.
If the driver then reacts, maximum braking power is immediately available. If there is still no reaction the Pre-Safe brake reduces the collision energy. The new brake is offered only as a package with the distance control and brake assistant Plus for which the car maker demands an extra price of 2,668 euros (3,355 dollars).
The new semi-automatic braking system is part of a development process with the objective of designing a fully automatic braking system, according to Frueh. Such a system would automatically brake a car with maximum power to avoid a collision. According to the car maker, such a system has already been successfully tested but needed further refinement before mass production.
