History’s “Vikings” Finale is May 1st, Preview Plus Some Thoughts on ‘The Choice’

flokiCan you believe that the finale to History’s “Vikings” is May 1st!

Here is a preview of the finale

Last night was titled “The Choice,” where all sorts of choices are being made, specifically about loyalties.

King Horik (Donal Logue)  is too alpha to hang tight with Ragnar (Travis Fimmel), and he’s so clever (except for open warfare where he SO blows it) , that Horik has wedged Siggy (Jessyln Gilsig) away and of course now Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård), who is like that friend of a famous person who grew up with them and now has been pushed off to the side while other more important people fill the gap. Enter…

Resentment

Siggy already told the Seer she misses the good old days when she swanned around Kattegat as the reigning Mrs. Earl and now she curses Ragnar and his family ever time she slops out the commodes. Understandable.

Horik is smart enough to sense the covetous nature and vanity of Siggy and has artfully used her to a) devirginize  his son and b) now will make her beholden to him and his whims, which include killing Ragnar’s youngest sons (with Princess Aslaug, who has come around as a sympathetic character, I must say).

Floki is just apoplectic that Athelstan (George Blagden) is back in their fold. He hates the guy and never misses a beat to taunt him about his religion, clothes, or the fact he is breathing air.  Floki is being manipulated by Horik who is perceptive and cunning as ever, sensing the rift the two one-time brothers of the open seas is having. Which leads up to…

L to R_ Princess Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland), Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick)

Ragnar is really smart

Ragnar if you recall, watched the political maneuverings at the last Viking bash after they defeated JarlyB’s men. He was hidden in the wings as he watched Siggy chit-chatting with Horik and Floki making his googoo googly eyes with Horik too as he got progressively drunker. The Seer said it all for him too, Ragnar is a stealthy student of human nature. He won’t get blindsided by these rank amateurs.

KingEcbert

Meanwhile, back in England…

Horik never read The Art of War, and cocks up a battle on the hillside to the point where Ragnar is yelling “run away” and Rollo is left for nearly dead. OMG did I not tell you about Princess Kwenthrith? She is a goer as Monty Python would say. “I want to breed with them…” she says to the Viking hordes who are now paid mercenary soldiers. I’m surprised Lagertha didn’t pop her one while she was ogling Ragnar at Ecbert’s negotiation table.

Ragnar’s crew is entertaining big fat jolly King Aelle while bruised and bloody Ragnar, Horik and Lagertha come to an accord with King Ecbert (Linus Roache). who had a pre-communal bath with all the Englishmen to lay it all out- no more war, let’s buy their services and get Mercia! Were you as appalled as I was when Aelle, drunk and naked, nearly face-plants Ecbert (in the bath) with his unleashed wedding tackle? That guy was a little too touchy-feely for a naked King bath.

In the end, Athelstan is the bargaining chip in all of this and it was a big loss for King Ecbert, who relied on Athelstan as scholar, translator, counsel and friend. Athelstan missed Ragnar and decides he is heading back to the North lands, leaving his big Crucifix behind.

“The Choice” was a fantastic lead up to the finale where loyalties are tested, and I fear some key players may meet their end (Siggy you better watch out, Floki too).  My gut tells me they see through Horik’s manipulations and they defy his wishes. But you never know!
