High School Musical stars to handle senior year on the big screen

The cast of Disney Channel’s “High School Musical” franchise will return for a third film that will be released to theaters on Oct. 24th.

High School Musical 3: Senior Year will feature Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Bleu and Monique Coleman.

Variety reports the film has been in the works as a planned theatrical release since the second television movie broke records on the Disney Channel. It is scheduled to start filming in the spring and will be directed by HSM2’s Kenny Ortega. It features a script by HSM2’s Peter Barsocchini. Bill Borden, Barry Rosenbush and Don Schain will produce.

The third film will follow seniors Troy (Efron) and Gabriella (Hudgens) as they face the prospect of being separated following their graduation from high school. They will be joined by the other Wildcats for an elaborate spring musical – which will address their experiences in high school and their hopes for the future.

The “High School Musical” franchise has been a monster success for Disney with the second film pulling in 18.2 million viewers (the largest audience for a basic-cable telecast). The film’s soundtrack was the No. 2 album of 2007 in the U.S. and sold 6.5 million units. The first film in the series has been seen by more than 250 million viewers worldwide since it was released in 2006.
