Im suprised though. I didn't think HD disk would die off this quick. Also this could upset existing Xbox 360 owners out there who have the current HD player that will just be owning another player. This is why I waited. I own a Xbox 360 but waited on the hardware because I figured that much like most companies in the past like 'Sega' which was my favoite console/game company. Upgrades have been the thing now. I'm kind of tire of this but they got to make there money right? Microsoft would be making a big mistake though making it internal because gamers already starting buying the elites etc. Another system would scare gamers.

This will spoil Blu Rays reputation. People who buyed Xbox have bought a unreliable piece of trash. The extra usage of HD DVD on this console caused many to crash.
Sony will not be able to stop Microsoft from offering a BD add-on because Sony does not control/own the Blue Ray consortium. As a member of the consortium, Sony would actually benefit from additional licensing fees the add-on would bring.
Furthermore, a separate add-on will improve the reliability of the Xbox as opposed to an integrated player, because it will reduce the usage of the internal drive for movies, thus helping it last longer.
A competitively priced add-on would be great for MS, Sony, gamers and movie-lovers.
the guy above me has the most logical response. while i dont own any consoles because i'm a 1337 computer gamer/ developer, I have noticed that in a performance ratio the xbox 360 tends to run faster than the over complicated cell processing in the ps3. But this is about drives, and while i wanted to see HD-DVD win, simply because its much cheaper, blue ray has won because it sounds cooler. And because it was included with a console unlike the HD-DVD format. Microsoft was the biggest sponser of HD-DVD, and they never really seemed to care about it. Because as I have always persumed (and why i havent purchased either drives for my computer) is because everything is moving online. Things like the apple tv (which in particuallar will not be very successful) are what will dominate future media. Consoles and Xbox Live like services FTW! Even netfix has started working on Microsoft's Silverlight platform, which is pretty awesome.
I agree with the two users above. Giving gamers the ability to choose the option to spend only extra 200 dollars is much more inviting than spending another 400 on another game system in order to watch blu-ray. I am a current owner of both the xbox 360 and the PS3. While I did originally buy the PS3 for the bolstered powerhouse it claimed to be, I quickly found myself using it as a blu-ray player rather than a game system due to constant frame rate issues with cross console titles. I think that creating an add on will improve upon the xbox and extend the life such as the previous user has stated. Also I don't think that it will really hurt sony in anyway due to a very large fan base for their products. Once sony stops producing games for the PS2 like microsoft has with the original xbox, sony fans will soon be at their nearest retailer to support the next gen PS3.
I desperately hope that M$ don't announce a Blu-Ray drive - I have a 360 with an HD-DVD drive and have sold my girlfriend on the idea of buying a PS3 so we can continue to get HD movies in the future!
I have a XBOX 360 and a HD DVD player for it.If everything is truly going to blue ray i think they should offer it for the 360.Nevermind the comp. of 360 and PS#3 I mean PS3 its about hi def not the games.I have 25 HD DVDs and if blue ray is the thing i dont not want to have hi def in the future so if blue ray is it than i want in.
i didn't see if anyone posted it yet but sony doesn't own the blu-ray format, Toshiba or Samsung does. I'm a 360 owner and I never bought a add-on drive because i was waiting for the out come of the war, I figured Blu-ray would win since the HD-DVD code leaked out our the internet, so it would make it a bad investment, well in a company stand point, not us. I'm just hoping that the 360 invest in a blu-ray add-on drive, or built in.
well its august, and theres no xbox 360 blu ray game player, what gives???

I think Microsoft pushing a bluray add-on to the 360 would spell trouble for Sony, considering that most people buying the PS3 are buying it as a bluray player and not a game console. If Microsoft can offer bluray playback on the 360 for under $200, it's more likely existing 360 owners and those looking to buy one soon will not be dropping another $400 for a PS3, given its currently inferior gaming library. Now, that may all change IF Sony can finally deliver some AAA titles that can only be played on the PS3, but Sony shouldn't be so smug regarding Microsoft joining the Bluray party.
