So basically it will be the same spec as the basic PS3 that was launched in 2006 but with a bigger hard drive? Wow. You could get the same thing by buying a 40gb PS3 and plugging a 500gb USB hard drive into it for probably less than this will cost and unlike the 360 the PS3 is already an award winning media centre. I cant see any way the 360 is going to compete with the PS3-PSP remote media access features either.
And you are feeding the wheels of the rumor mill. Even if this $1000 console comes out, the gameplay will not improve. Devs will still have to base games off of the core system therefore no games will utilize the hd dvd.
Ummm, the 80gb PS3 is $499 USD, not $599. MS can't use the HD-DVD drive for games, so all this will do is jack up the price and replace the Elite, piss off everyone who bought an elite, and utterly fail when HD-DVD is eliminated this year (losing worldwide in sales 9:1 Japan, 4:1 Europe, 3:1 Australia, 2:1 US). This is pure rumour and from a business standpoint makes zero sense.
The 80gb Sony PS3 is $499.00 not $599.00 as mentioned in this article.
LOL!!! Now this is going to be hilarious. Do they actually think that they can succeed in doing this. They created the xbox 360 elite and it still overheats, scratches disks, and gets THE RROD every 2 hours. Also they're just going to fall in the 'focus on hardware' trap which was a bit of Sony's mistake in 06 - Q2 of 07. They barely have any good exclusive games coming out next year when Sony has tons. Sony - Resistance 2, God of War III, Final Fantasy XIII, Possibly - Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Metal Gear Solid 4, HOME (new network), LittleBigPlanet, Killzone 2, Haze, Gran Turismo 5, and a bunch of others. My prediction is that Sony will become the market leader after all these games come out.
I doubt this will come to pass. The PS3 is already outselling the Xbox by over a 100,000 units a week world wide and the gap is growing. An Xbxx style media centre has no hope of disrupting blu-ray any more than it already has.
Everyone has already covered the PS3's price difference, but the 360 elite is $449, not $479. It's like you never knew there were price drops.
what the hell is the point!! the hd-dvd cannot be used for games and hd-dvd is getting killed by blu-ray! hope this rumour isnt true cause if it is then microsoft are scared of sony and its ps3, we all know as of late the ps3 is starting to show what its capable of and the sales have really picked up. if this is true then this is just a dumb idea! cant microsoft think of any other way to start selling well again!
Furthermore, MGS4 rumors are just that. Konami came out and put the kaibosh on that pretty quick yesterday didn't they? And Crysis...I dunno, Crytek was pretty blunt when they said neither console could run it. And on top of that, Crysis for the PC virtually tanked....so who cares? lol.

there's nothing the xbox can do, that the ps3 can't. However, there are things that can be done w/the ps3 that microsoft can't compete. If those few changes are what they're hinging the 'ultimate' on then they're in big trouble. people can already do iptv and dvr services w/ps3, why wait for the 'ULTIMATE'? let's see microsoft do remote play! come on microsoft, fix what you have before you throw another mess out to be humiliated.

First of all stop buying into the garbage that the PS3 is superior. As a gaming machine the XBOX is as capable and is in fact more capable currently due to its more powerful GPU. The Xenos GPU on the XBOX 360 is superior to the RSX on the PS3. Xenos simply has more power - higher fillrate, higher pixel processing power, higher vertex processing power, and better memory architecture. If you look at multiplatform games and contrast the graphics on the two consoles, XBOX 360 almost always leads.This is not an opinion unlike what people like you all think because you don't know a thing about technology. The PS3 with its blue ray player, built in WiFi, and card reader may be better as an all in one machine, but by no means a better gaming machines. On paper, the Playstation 3’s Cell engine is more capable than XBOX 360’s triple-core Xenon CPU. However the XBOX 360 is much easier to develop for. The PS3 cell processor has yet to be utilized and the SDK provided by sony is as usual more difficult to work with to make games and an indication that the PS3 is harder to develop for is the fact that almost all multiplatform games arrive weeks - if not months - after their 360 versions. Eventually the PS3 should win in the category of performance but not until someone is able to fully exploit the system. To what extent and when is a question. One year after the PS3 release was obviously not long enough for anyone to do this. Until then the XBOX, loud and all, is the better gaming machine, period. The PS3 didn’t get much better in a year, and in fact the hardware got worse with each revision. It started out with full PS2 backwards compatibility, and now it has none at all. It started out with SACD support, and now it doesn’t support it at all. However, it also got better in many ways; more than anything, it’s an excellent multimedia hub. With multiple video format support (and DivX AVI support coming), and the ability to stream to the PSP, it’s clearly superior in that regard. Furthermore, it’s a better home video player, since it not only has a better interface for such things, but it doesn’t sound like a jet engine taking off. For all of you who don't know what you are talking about (that's all of you who have or are planning to buy a PS3 for some reason) read a book or just keep your mouths shut. Stop acting like you have to defend your dumb decision to by a PS3 who's life will depend on the success or failure of Blu Ray technology. Either choice would be great for gaming and your decision should be made with knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of both systems. Until you acquire such knowledge it's probably best to keep your mouths closed.
PS3 supports all the tech mentioned above and more out of the box from the first day.
1- PS3 is a HD-Movie player ( All PS3 models come with a blu-ray disc ) which means all PS3 has the same lower dominator, which is good when developing games for the system because game developers will not have to worry about all the other versions of the console ( unlike what is happeneing in Microsoft campagian )
Note: what is happening in Microsoft campagian is a complete mess, they have xbox360s that has no hard drive capability at all and other consoles that have hard drive. Some xbox360 consoles have component TV out only and others have HDMI. Some xbox360 can do 1080p, other 360 consoles can only do 1080i. Some xbox360 has the red ring of death, other xbox360 don't have it, which is good not to include this feature in all xbox360 models. 2- Even if there will be a model that includes the HD DVD player, Microsot will not be able to utilize it for game uses because the majoritiy of xbox360 gamers don't have the HD-DVD drive and if they do make some exclusive titles that utilize the HD-DVD player, the game will suffer from low demand.
3- lets face it, this isn't a personal opinion, it's just the simple fact that blu-ray is the superior version of HD storage media and of course HD-DVD is the medicore version. not only the blu-ray format has more than double the storage space HD-DVD has, but also Blu-ray has twice the data transfer rate of that of HD-DVD, it means more data can be transfer between your disc and console for a given time, more data means better video streaming and shorter loading time. The only way i can see the new rumour utilizing the 1080p resolution is by only playing HD-DVD not games. I forgot to mention that blu-ray movies are outselling HD-DVD movies by 2:1.
4- All Sony's PS3 consoles come with a 1.3 HDMI port ( Search google for more info about HDMI verisons ), now this guy mentioned that the upcoming Microsoft rumour supports 1080p. That isn't enough info, we wil have to wait and see what version of HDMI it will support. Newer versions of HDMI support more resolution, color depth and sound quality.
5- 320GB is good space, but not good enough for all your demos, TV shows and Movies on any xbox360 console. Why? because Microsoft will not allow you to save or copy your Videos to other hard drive and if you do, you won't be able to load your videos from external hard drives, it has to be in your main hard drive for xbox360 to be able to see it and play it. BTW, your options are limited to Microsoft first party hard dives if you need to upgrade your storage.
Honestly, I don't see a 320GB verison of the xbox 360 winning new crowds, the only thing that kept xbox360 ahead of PS3 is 2 things, the first one is the one year head start 360 had, the other one is the lower price of the 360 and the higher price of the PS3. So, what Microsoft is trying to prove here? That they have a console with higher specs than the PS3? I don't think they will be able to do that Unless they hire some cheap journalists to help them spread their propaganda.
This makes me laugh if true. After all the gloating from the Xbot fanboys that Sony had a rubbish strategy for the PS3, what will they say now MS (seemingly in desperation) are scurrying to basically make a PS3 clone! I've even heard they're working on motion sensing controllers too!!! I also think there is very little chance of them being able to offer that spec for cheaper than the PS3.
If this comes to pass the Sony PR boys should be all over it stating how this is vindication of their strategy, and that Sony delivered the definitive next gen hardware experience to consumers first time where MS are now on their third attempt (360 > Elite > Ultimate).
Also don't forget games will not be able to use HD-DVD or the Harddrive as standard because developers have to cater for the 360 Core and 360 Arcade crowd.
Honestly it amazes me why the 360 has such a backing! Poor quality extremely unreliable hardware (does anyone have their original 360?! lol), continual introduction of expensive proprietary accessories or new models - yeah the console is slightly cheaper than a PS3, but not by the time you've bought the overpriced harddrive (if you're a Core/Arcade owner), or the overpriced wireless adaptor, or the HD-DVD player, or an Elite for HDMI 1.2, or an Ultimate for HDMI 1.3 (which the PS3 already has for the HD-Sound), or the online subscription etc, plus their dlc is generally more expensive than the PSN too (and the PSN also has a lot of free stuff that you pay for on Live like wallpapers and themes).
To me this will be more of a destructive move for the 360 console, they'll probably drop all support for it next year and introduce a Xbox 720 anyway (like they dropped the original Xbox after 4 years, whereas Sony continue to actively support and release software for the PS2).
I wonder if they will also make the 360 Ultimate less ugly? Maybe they will go down the PSX route (remember that?, it was only released in Japan I think), it will probably be just as (un)successful too!
This may just another desperate bid by MS to prolong the HD format war and confuse the HD movie market until they are ready to launch their own digital HD distribution service (reason why they paid Paramount $50M to go to HD-DVD for 18 months). All the signs point to Blu-ray winning, and if Warner jump to Blu-ray exclusively, or Universal go multi-platform, or Paramount go multi-platform after their contract expires, the war is lost and MS will end up with a warehouse full of expensive doorstops!

LOL. as long as it will still use the DVD9(max:8.5gb disc capacity) for the games then whats the point of buying this machine? IF it cant reach the blu ray(max:50gb) game disc capacity, it still stands no chance against the ps3. IT seems like microsoft is all about hard drive gigs but all we gamerz want are good quality games , high frames/s e.t.c.
You know its going to have a Jasper (rumored to be in stores in Augest 2008) mother board instead of a Falcon (which I think came out in October 2007) so that will make up much of the production cost. They will still be able to undercut PS3 and turn a small profit.
I hope it happens. That way people will realize how great the PS3 already is.
All xbox360's are capable of 1080p(including my brothers launch model that still works). An update is required to allow 1080p over component cables. HDMI merely integrates the audio and visual signals.
I love the picture my component cable produces on my 720p set(i have a 360pro with HDMI out but i dont use it, i have an upconvert DVD player using HDMI so i dont have to listen to my xbox fan while watching movies).
The purpose of HDMI is to stop piracy. Eventually studios do not want HD content to be allowed to be sent over compentent cables because they cannot protect the content like on HDMI. This is not the case yet and they wont be able to stop people using older consoles or dvd players.
I also dont want 'true' hd sound. My reciever already supports 6.1DTS ES (which sounds great for movies that support it [sev7n, TLOTR, Xmen]) and frankly i dont feel like dropping another $300 plus on a reciever that might sound the same or only slightly better.

I hope MS reads these posts and understands that the public wants the Xbox 360 with built-in HD-DVD, HDMI 1.3, easily upgradeable HDD, Wi-Fi, etc. I think the use of HD-DVD for movies and games is very valuable and much needed.
When I purchased the Xbox 360 Pro Thanksgiving 2006 I would never have guessed that within two weeks I would return it for a full refund due to the RROD. Almost bought the Elite Thanksgiving 2007, but decided to wait. I am determined to wait until MS fixes all the problems (RROD, disk scratching, irritating noise).
I would purchase the Xbox 360 Ultimate in 2008 so that I can get the most out of the gaming system / media center. I would love to see it by Thanksgiving 2008, I would have a Merry Christmas. And if any Microsoft employees are reading this ... Please give us want we want, otherwise we have no choice but to go to the darkside (PS3).
i like my mega drive, its also got a mega cd. but, well hang on - i had a 360 and sold it to get a ps3. more than happy with it, graphics so far the same but loads more features and it lasts longer then a month.

Firstly Bill G is making this announcement in one of his last speeches as chairman of Microsoft, do you think he is going to depart on a bombshell.....thanks everyone heres a different xbox 360 you can buy??? my bets are on them unveiling there plans for the next next generation of console. 360 was announced 2 years before it was released and everyone has always said that MS new console would appear around 2010 - so its now 2008....do the maths. Thinking about the market right now as well what a time to throw that one at Sony......oh you know your console thats just starting to sell well guess what, weve built something bigger, better etc... imagine 1080p native gaming, 4 x quad core processor, 1 GB VRAM, 4 GB System RAM, 1TB HDD etc......

It's a waste of time machine trying to promote a dying format, and trying to overtake Sony's ground with all its HD-ness - that Sony started, and which was being accused of in the beginning of this console race. Congratulations, you're coming to the uhh... darkside... here in a few months. At least on PS3, we can host an online party all night long, for free, with no hic-uppy service (Live) and our consoles won't fail(ie not RROD).
As for M$. Way to keep screwing over your customers with the features. You just can't seem to nail what Sony's already done in two years pasttime. What better way to promote a RROD console than to say, 'Look! More stuff included to overshadow our dying console..'
Wow, MS is really sticking it to their consumers. First the original with no HDMI or 120 GB Hard drive, then the Elite with HDMI, then the new models with HDMI, then newer models with cooler chips. MS is so stupid. Even with HDDVD built in, they've screwed themselves because it wont be able to play HDDVD games, just movies. Limiting themselves to only 9 GBs. Everyone laughed at the PS3 at launch, ha, Sony obviously knew what they were doing.

Looks like almost all the comments are from Sony fan boys. I guess because they have so much free time waiting for a game worth playing on their console with a blu ray player while the 360 fan boys are actually playing games on their system. Both systems have their positives and negatives. Seems like the Sony lovers are always the most vocal about it for some reason.

Sony has their own quality problems if you do a search just no where near as bad as 360. Blu Ray makes it a good movie player but so far has NO EFFECT on games which is what a GAME CONSOLE is for. In the future it might but I don't see the 360's built in DVD player causing a problem for MS. Besides, a very small percentage of people are even switching to high definition movie format. Both companies have been guilty of selling crippled models to entice more people to buy their system. I personally think MS messed up by releasing a system without a hard drive and without built in wireless. As far as online, the 360 has a free online service also. If you ask anyone besides 12 year old Sony fan boys, most everyone agrees that the more established 360 Live service is far ahead of anything Sony or Nintendo has now (or has announced for the future). As far as the PS3 outselling the 360, other than 2 or 3 monthly spikes after price decreases, everything has outsold the PS3 month to month. It says something when the 360 even with its well published problems still outsells the PS3 consistantly. Theres tons of other things to mention about both systems but fan boys from either side are blind to fact and logic. For the record I own both systems. I play games almost exclusively on the 360 and use the PS3 mainly as a blu ray movie player. Once the PS3 gets some exclusive games that live up to the hype, I'll probably use the PS3 more often for games instead of the occasional Resistance Fall of Man or Motor Storm (both of which are good games). Also for the record, I have one of the early 360 systems and have not had any problems with it. Maybe lucky or maybe its not sitting on carpet or sitting behind glass doors with no ventilation. Everyone have fun declaring how much better their PS3/360 is how stupid the other side is.

Finally someone with a voice a reason. Who gives a crap about who's is better or not. JUST PLAY THE GAMES!!!! If you can afford both, get them both. If you can't afford them both, get the 360 right now. Better value for the dollar - just face it. It's not to say Sony's PS3 won't catch up, but if you're living in the here and now (and most of us do unless you're playing Halo or Mass Effect..)), enjoy what you have today.

Just my 2 cents: There have been some great games on both machines. But as far as the machines themselves go both HD consoles have made this generation boring as hell. Why is my games console trying to get me to worry about a load of other crap I already have a PC for?
I don't care about HD DVD or BluRay, they'll both get as killed by downloading as DVD Audio and Super CDs (or whatever the hell they were called) were.
Where's the excitement in GAMING? Why are people arguing over graphics on machines that have both just been dumped on by PC (Crysis devs statement that neither machine can run Crysis on full)? What's with all the sequels? Where're my Goddamned pills? God it makes me feel old... SNES, Megadrive and the arcade, those were gaming's golden age. Somebody take me back to the home.
Release it, and they will of almost caught up with the ps3, but it aint going to happen, would write more, and tell you all how on paper the ps3 is better.

you forgot to mention you're a sony fanboy......me and my mates have been doing consoles since the arly days of atari (6 of us) and only one has a ps3 and he considers it a waste of money...poor ports...

First, who really cares what system you buy as long as YOU enjoy it? I could care less what you think of me for what I decided to purchase it has no bearing on my live or yours.
Second, are all you people that short sighted, can you remember the days that the PS dominated the consol world. I actually quit gaming do the carp that was coming out for it as it was just regurgitated BS. Sure there were a few games that were good, and please stop with the “this system has more games than that system”. How many games do you truly play through out a year, sure you might play 100 or more, but out of that number how many do you truly play for days for months for a year. I would guess three to five titles per year that are truly standouts.
Third, both sides of this BS keep trashing the other side for what, to prove your better? If you listen/read to what is being said do you truly believe that there should only be one choice. Well lets see if I can put this in a perspective that you can understand (I still might offend a few hold outs on this one).

God I know Crysis is not the end all of all games, far from it. Take any game that pushes the current hardware to the limits and challenges what can be done no matter if its just graphics, game play etc. The games that come after it will just be that much better because of developers like Crytek that push hardware and software to the max.

Both the 360 and the PS3 have good and bad points, and although i currently only have a 360, I am saving up for a PS3. (I am one of those rare and exotic creatures that isn't a fanboy).

you're just showing how much this is bothering you.....this console is speculation (ridiculous speculation if you rationally think about it)....like i said before, its more than likely going to be to announce the next xbox incarnation and nothing to do with this gen if you look at the floorplan (microsofts is huge and so is epics to show off some of gears of war 2 prob, nintendo and sonys is about a fifth the size of microsoft's so it's going to be a major announcement by microsoft)......and just for the record, doesnt bill always win???? you may not like it but its truth that he has evil lawyers that make his will happen.....the xbox is making money....the ps3 isnt making a lot money at all.... do the maths.... we'll all see what it is on sunday...stop wetting yourselves!!!!

PS3 will win the console war because of all its capabilities plus all upcoming titles like Resistance 2, Drakes Fortune 2, Assassins Creed 2, Haze, Motorstorm 2, Home, MGS4 - do i need to go on, the xbox just cant compete, plus i dont see the xbox having remote play, also blu-ray is dominating the market so microsoft will waste their time and effort putting it in the Xbox.
what a waste the HD-DVD wouldn't even be able to be used to for games. If a company actually made a game on HD-DVD Microsoft would just be screwing over all the current 360 owners. Sounds to me like MS is scared and getting desperate.
hmmmmmmmmm. consider this. hd dvd players are cheaper than blu ray players. this new console wont have games in hd dvd. soooooooo if you want an hd dvd player then get an hd dvd player right? why get this new console? more expensive than hd dvd players and the games wont be based on that. man i tought geniouses workeed at microsoft. they should have done all this from the begining and not catch up now. now sony went ambitious from the begining. they tru all that in there and now they managed to lower the price of the parts and all that. xbox went from being cheaper to more expensive while the ps3 when from expensive to cheaper... ¿?

Try real facts. Sony is a company that makes a revenue of 60-70 billion, compared to Microsoft's 40-50 billion. Maybe YOU should use Google. Google search 'Revenue Sony' and 'Revenue Microsoft' and see what you come up with, genius.

All these comments keep sounding like a broken record. I'm not a fan boy for either system but it seems like the Sony Fanboys keep rambling on about how 'UR 360 is SuX0r mY PS3 haz blu ray' . Thats the best argument most of you can can up with. 'I can watch blu ray on my PS3 and someday it will have exclusive games worth buying'. As I said in an earlier post every negative against MS and the 360 can also be said the PS3. Also, as I said earlier, I have both systems. I use the 360 for the great games it has (some exclusive, some not) and the PS3 as a cheap (compared to stand alone units) blu ray player. There are some good PS3 exclusive games coming down the road but I hope we don't end up with another Lair that looks great but plays like crap. To be fair, the 360 has also had some duds that didn't live up to the hype. Both companies are adjusting to the market. MS is looking at motion sensing controls and Sony is adding vibration to its controller for example. Thats after both of them said neither was important to them. If you look at value, Sony is probably a better system with the built in features but none of that matters if theres no games for it. As of right now, its a cheap movie player but it will get better. So as I said earlier, stick with facts and just enjoy the system(s) that you have. I have both systems but I still do most of my gaming on the PC. Have fun.

M$ knows this and yet they still come out with 'revamped trash box360s' but still have not figured out what is causing the famous 'ring of death!'. too bad for microsoft. people may think that this means games will be much better, and/or movies....but sadly no. Y? xbox made a HUGE MISTAKE not having the 360 to have a STANDARD HARDRIVE (a last geberation feature that made xbox have easily 5x faster loading times compared to the ps2) again, ms should've upped the anty with a high-def drive. Games like 'killzone 2' are planning to use the entire disk...and you get more 'original' content when it comes to audio...compression can only go so far with audio, the more you compress to fit a disc, the more crappier stuff you get at the end.
so what does this mean? ANY 360 CANNOT COUNT ON A HARDRIVE OR HIGH-DEFINITION DISC DRIVE. Which means even if you happen to have a hardrive it wont help, games are made certain ways. PS3 games can count that 100% of ps3's will have a hardrive to depend on for faster loading times and better frame rates. 360 cant do that...
Are any of you sony idiots aware of the current sales numbers? 18 million for Microsoft, 8 million for sony. Ok, 8 million for sony is in one year. take that off Microsofts number and they still have 10 million. Fact: most games dont even fill up an entire DVD(8.5 gb). That tells me that blu-ray is important for movies, but not at all for games. Fact: The Xbox 360 is completely 1080p compatible. Fact: When everybody talks about the best games on ps3 they are either talking about drakes fortune, a game that any reputable multi-platform unbiased magazine gave a 6.0 or worse, or they are playing a 360 port.

xbox doesnt have a hi-def player by default or a motion sensing controller or wireless built in or free online gameplay.
but who cares it has a bigger gaming network better graphics, can share photos, msic and movies form windows comps and talk on windows live messenger.
i dont know much about ps3 but i know that its graphics arnt up to the standard of xbox 360 and thats what buying a games console used to be about.
and all you peple saying that if microsoft did this they would be making a ps3 clone are fools. what dp you think sony did in the first plac they waited to see what the competition bought out then they stole the idea of motion sening technology from the wii and then tried to top the graphics and capabilities of the xbox and probably got the capabilities but the are still a bit off of the graphics. the only thing ps3 has going for it that kind of makes it something your not going to through out when the next console comes out is the fact that it plays next generation media discs ie blu-ray.
