Slightly misleading title aside, sport on the Nintendo Wii is indeed coming to the beach in the form of THQ’s upcoming title Big Beach Sports, which is set to bring a wealth of outdoor sporting action to Nintendo’s innovative little console this summer.

Currently in development exclusively for Wii, Big Beach Sports will give gamers the opportunity to compete in a variety of exhilarating outdoor and beach-bound sporting events, which will include American football, volleyball, soccer, cricket, disc golf (?), and bocce.
According to publisher THQ, each of the sports included in the game will incorporate the unique control mechanics of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk and allow players to easily and intuitively pick up and play the games they already know and quickly learn those that they don’t.
“Big Beach Sports drops players into a seaside resort setting with a wide variety of compelling outdoor sports to play and master,” explained Randy Shoemaker, director of global brand management at THQ. “Sports including bocce, cricket and disc golf are making their Wii debuts and combined with the inclusion of more traditional games like soccer, American football and volleyball, Big Beach Sports will be an appealing title for the growing audience of Wii gamers.”
Big Beach Sports is currently in development with HB Studios Multimedia and, once released, will enable up to four players to participate in its sporting categories, while the single-player component of the game will encourage players to master each sport using creative control combos and real-life physical movements relevant to each sport.
HB Studios Multimedia certainly has plenty of sports experience in the videogame world, which bodes well for Big Beach Sports. Specifically, the studio has produced a host of prominent PlayStation 2 titles such as EA’s NBA Live 08, NHL 08, Rugby 08, UEFA Champions League 2006-2007, as well as FIFA Street 2 on the PlayStation Portable.
Let’s hope the creative team can transfer that experience over to the Wii while implementing a worthwhile control system that feels integral and not tagged on.
