The recent unveiling of Ninja Gaiden Black on Microsoft’s burgeoning Xbox Originals download service, coupled with the imminent arrival of 2D ninja action title N+ on the Xbox Live Arcade, seems to indicate that ninja fever is in the air. Credit: Tecmo.And to help compound that notion, Nintendo just happens to be throwing its own ninja hat into the download ring this week with the announcement that classic title Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom is now available for those dedicated fans of the Virtual Console.For a measly 500 Wii Points, ninja enthusiasts can retread the well worn path of Ryu Hayabusa as they take a trip down (a corpse strewn) memory lane in this NES classic, which made up the third and final part of the original Ninja Gaiden saga.Ryu is framed for FBI agent Irene Lew's murder, and it's up to him to clear his name. Defeating superior life-forms created out of "life energy" called BIO-NOIDs and avoiding enemy ambushes are among the many obstacles which Ryu faces in this unpredictable adventure of mystery, deceit and destruction. Noticeable changes to the game-play mechanics include Ryu's ability to grab on to horizontal surfaces, his reduced falling speed and altered jumping maneuvers, and visible power-ups. Help Ryu defeat the forces of evil once more and discover the real culprit behind Irene's death as one of the most loved trilogies in video-game history comes to a close.

And, if Ryu’s thrilling adventures don’t quite appease the need for retro sequels of yesteryear, then why not turn your gaming attention to SEGA Genesis classic Phantasy Star II, which will lightly sting the pocket for a mere 800 Wii Points.

Sounds like a winning combination to us -- although ninja addicts will likely feel overawed by the wealth of gaming opportunities currently sneaking through the shadows towards them. Nintendo adds new downloadable videogame titles of old to the Wii Shop Channel at 9.00am PST every Monday.
