If Santa’s gift offerings have failed to satiate your festive longings then Nintendo is more than happy to appease any lingering need with the introduction of three more classic gaming titles to the already-bulging Virtual Console platform. Credit: NamcoAccessed via the popular Wii Shop Channel (online connection required), Nintendo’s VC this week delivers "classic adventure title" Donkey Kong Country 3 for the entertainment of "every reveller in your household, from the nicest to the naughtiest." And that’s not all – oh, no – because the Japanese videogame giant is also dishing up espionage thrills in the form of Rolling Thunder 2 and hard-hitting hockey action in Blades of Steel.Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble: Having made its initial appearance on the SNES, Donkey Kong Country 3 brings players back to Donkey Kong Island to rejoin the hairy Kong family as they embark on yet another adventure. With Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong both captured by the Kremlings and their evil leader KAOS, it falls to Dixie Kong and giant infant Kiddy Kong to rescue the eponymous heroes. Forming a powerful team with complementing powers and abilities, Dixie and Kiddy duly embark on their brave quest to confront the Kremling horde. And they’re not along either, with "returning favourites" such as Funky Kong and Enguarde the swordfish offering assistance along the way.Blades of Steel: Electronic Arts and 2K Games may have evolved the hockey genre to the point of breathtaking photorealism but, back in the day, Blades of Steel on the Nintendo Entertainment System was all the rage.According to Nintendo, players will need "both the artful skills of a finesse player and the bone-crushing brutality of an enforcer," to carve success into the gameplay ice of Blades of Steel.The intense action will see hockey fans battling to "bring home the cup, win the MVP award, get on the covers of major sports magazines and date a beautiful model," states the game’s blurb – while they would be wise to slap the puck past the opposition goal tender while they’re at it too. With frantic ice-bound action and even the odd fistfight thrown into the mix, Blades of Steel is fast-paced and thrilling from start to finish.Rolling Thunder 2: Slip into your slickest espionage clobber and rejoin the intrepid ranks of Interpol’s Rolling Thunder task force as it once again takes on the evil ranks of the Geldra organisation in this sequel to the popular side-scrolling shooter on the SEGA Genesis (Mega-Drive).Now operating under the moniker of Neo-Geldra and led by the nefarious Gimdo, Geldra is planning to destroy numerous orbiting satellites and only the player – as either Leila or Albatross from the original Rolling Thunder – can foil the evil plot.Playable in either single or two-player modes, Interpol advises that bullets are used wisely while tackling multiple levels of action in this action-packed sequel. All three classic Nintendo games are live NOW and can be found through the Wii Shop Channel. Donkey Kong Country 3 and Rolling Thunder 2 are available for download at 800 Wii Points each, while Blades of Steel is available for 500 Wii Points. Yet more VC titles will be released this coming Monday (Dec 31), and every Monday thereafter.
