Credit: Nintendo.But 2007’s real hardware winner could well be the diminutive dual-screen Nintendo DS, which has already surpassed 6 million unit sales in the United States alone and continues to be a hugely popular purchase some three years after its initial launch. Moreover, according to a GamesIndustry report, Nintendo has revealed that it is selling a single DS handheld every five seconds in the US region and is holding fast to the belief that the little clamshell console will shake off the challenge of the Wii and emerge as the year’s biggest-selling platform.

"There’s no let-up in sight," commented George Harrison, senior VP at Nintendo of America (NoA). "Nintendo DS appeals strongly to both core and casual gamers, and its momentum is set to propel us into 2008."

News that the DS topped 6 million US sales by the close of November comes hot on the heels of the record-breaking sales amassed by the little console during the recent Thanksgiving period, which saw it rake in a staggering 650,000 sales.

According to sales monitoring Web site VGChartz.com, the Nintendo DS has thus far sold just shy of 60 million units around the world since release, while its main market rival, the Sony PlayStation Portable, has sold some 27.7 million units.
