PlayStation Portable owners looking to expand the versatility of their already-impressive console by turning it into a gaming mobile phone can do just that thanks to the introduction of free telephony service Skype.

Available for download via Sony Computer Entertainment’s latest system update (Version 3.90), Skype arrives as a free addition to the PSP’s expansive feature armoury, allowing users to make free online calls to some 200 million other Skype users around the world.

Those users wishing to connect to, and receive calls from, traditional landlines and mobile phones can also use the PSP’s Skype software (via SkypeIn and SkypeOut), although charge costs will apply.

To take advantage of the Skype download, users need only download the new system update, register the software and start talking with a headset and remote control.

Along with the arrival of Skype, v3.90 will also deliver the Go!Messenger icon to PSP screens. While not open for use until the close of February, Go!Messenger furthers Sony’s commitment towards communications on PlayStation Portable by bringing the ability for the console to host video and voice chat along with several other features.

As the clock ticks by towards the introduction of Go!Messenger, expectant users can learn more about what it has to offer by clicking the icon and accessing a dedicated Web site. Also, unlike Skype, which is only available to Slim & Lite models of the PSP through RAM memory limitations of the original hardware, Go!Messenger will function on both models.
