Sony explains why original PSP will not get Skype

Sony Computer Entertainment has recently announced that free online telephony service Skype will be integrated into the ‘Slim & Light’ PlayStation Portable (PSP-2000) via an upcoming system upgrade – a move that will turn the PSP into a phone as well as a rather sexy gaming and multimedia handheld. Credit: Sony.However, while the introduction of Skype software will certainly delight certain PSP owners, those who invested in Sony’s original portable videogame console might be left somewhat disgruntled by news that only the new re-imagined PSP will receive the Skype upgrade.At the time of its official Skype press release, Sony offered no explanation as to why its original (PSP-1000) console would not be eligible for Skype inclusion, which has now been remedied by Sony’s director of corporate communications in Europe, Nick Sharples.Sharples has said that while the PSP-1000 and PSP-2000 are "identical in basic functions," they do differ in terms of hardware specification to a certain degree, which leaves the PSP-2000 open to features not necessarily accessible via the PSP-1000. "We had studied the possibility of supporting Skype with PSP-1000," outlines Sharples, "but had to give it up because of the smaller size of main memory on PSP-1000 series."Essentially, the original PlayStation Portable offers up only 32MB of memory, while the newer ‘Slim & Light’ model delivers twice that at 64MB. That stinks. i was disipointed that sony would not give the psp fat skype. if I had known that sony would release the psp slim, I would not buy the fat. oh well.

Citing lack of RAM as the reason for not support the PSP-1000 is simply not true. the 24MB of usable RAM on the PSP should be plenty for Skype to run with a little optimization. I'd say it's marketing - Sony wanting existing PSP-1000 users to upgrade to PSP-2000 or even PSP-3000.
We've bought the hardware once, I'm not buying it again!

LOL! What problem is to make Skype for PSP 1000. I dont want voice and video. I need only text messages. It dont takes 64mb RAM...

yeah id have to agree, but how many times have we bought new game consoles in the past? if they made things fully upgradable no one would buy anything new after a while.
