I have to say i can't agree with this review score at all. I am not a true Metal Gear Solid fan but found this to be one of the best games i have played. Cut scenes that add to the game, plus great gameplay sections, especially when the game is played on the harder levels it becomes a tactical affair adding even more depth to the gameplay. I could list many more positives but i don't think i need to as most people will have already made up their mind up on how good this game is. Sorry but seventy nine percent is quite far of the mark, you need to add at least ten percent to the score to get it anywhere close to correct.
I have to say that I don't agree with this review in the least. I have not played any of the other metal gear games and still found the story to be comprehendable and the cutscenes to be very entertaining and funny. I enjoyed the game from beginning to end. It may not be perfect and I can see how some might not like the long cutscenes but this review is rubbish.. Sorry
I have read the review for a second time and find nothing you have written corresponding with the experiences i had. You are critical of Kojima about being self indulgent but if i am correct have not all the Metal Gear solid games had these kind of cut scenes. He has every right to make it for the fans as they are the ones who have purchased the games in the past and i am not sure attracting new fans was his intention. Personally i found the boss battles to be very good and a lot less predictable than most other games. I am going to stop now as i feel you started out with negative views about this game and continued them in your review. Your lack of detail about drebin points, the MK2, the camosuit, how the difficulty levels make you play the game in different ways etc, maybe makes me think you are a casual reviewer looking for casual games.
Steve I could understand your annoyances about the cutscenes being not to your liking, but to shave off 21 points when you can simply hit start and skip to get back into the gameplay is ... rather tepid argument at best. If you aren't fond of it as a movie, than use the Kojima 'implemented' skip feature. He certainly isn't forcing you to watch through his 'techno-babble.' And btw, the information he presents on cloning and nanotechnology is actually quite real and isn't just pulled out of his arse. Don't believe his explanation about a premature aging snake? Read up on the lifespan of Dolly, the first cloned sheep.
who are you guys? it seems that now every average joe is qualified to rate games.
79%? Did you type that backwards hotshot? Metal Gear Solid 4 is easily one of the best installments to the Metal Gear series and definitely one of Kojima's finest works. Every aspect of a great game is evident in MGS4 - and without a doubt maintains a fantastic story line that is twenty-one years in the making! Not to throw around any spoilers but the conclusion is epic with one of the greatest show-downs displayed in gaming history. To give Metal Gear Solid 4 a review of a 79% is more than a mistake, it's idiotic.
Well this review once again shows us that the world of online journalism is plagued by complete muppets who will do ANYTHING to try and get a hit on their website.
The entire review seems to take it as a personal affront that this game has long and involved cut scenes. Wake up! That's a been a trait of every single Metal Gear Game, its not particular to this one! Everyone else on the planet seems to enjoy this (as well they should), but should you not have the wit or intelligence to enjoy it for what it is, you can simply press the start button and continue with the game. Unlike your completely inaccurate assertions, the gameplay portion of this game is significantly loger than the cut scene elements. In a game that takes about 18 hours to complete, you could cut all the cut scenes and still have 11 hours of gameplay - significantly more gameplay than all the other tripe this reviewer no doubt lavishes praise on.
Far from getting some kind of respect for 'bunking the trend' your review has shown us all quite clearly that you have no idea at all of what makes a good and compelling game experience. I've played just about every major game since the inception of video gaming, and have developed major AAA games for over 15 years. This title, whilst not perfect, represents just about the pinnacle of evolution of video gaming as a moving art form. When the rest of the world sees something different from you, its usually because you're not seeing with any clarity, and your words demonstrate your lack of credibility perfectly, being as contradictory and as superficial as they are.
We have all learned that that your opinion is completely worthless, and that when seeking an objective review of video gaming product, coming to this site is a waste of time. You have my utter contempt sir, and well deserved it is too..
lol what a joke of a review. and no i will not be revisiting this site
I don't think this is a fair review at all. Mr. Smith, had you played previous MGS games you would understand that Kojima's indulgences were necessary to piece together the series' exposition as a whole. While it's understandable to be frustrated about long drawn-out cut scenes they are essential to further the story, thereby engrossing the player even more (if you were actually paying attention). Now, if you don't know the background of the MGS series, as is apparently the case, then you should perhaps not be reviewing this at all. This is not a game for casuals new to the MGS series necessarily. It is the final installment of an excellent franchise, so obviously prior knowledge would help. Hideo Kojima is, as always, serving his fans.
Who are you... i have never heard of this site before. I guess you did your job and got the hits that you were looking for. Also, I see what you did there with the score. You just looked at Metacritic and found the lowest score for MGS4 and scored the game 1 point below the lowest score, so people would go to your site to read what the hell the idiot was talking about.
Your moneyhat from Microsoft is in the mail.
I think he wrote this review to just gather attention. Pathetic.
Stevie Smith, your review deserves a 79%.
You are so off base with this review it makes me wonder if your at all familiar with MGS.
the eviewer asks that games be reviewed on there merits and not on the reviewers personal tastse, then uses the review as his own personal soapbox 4 his take on how games should or shouldnt b made, mgs4 is undoughtedly next gen entertainment of the highest caliber. its a shame people like the reviewer in question r more concerned with there own recognition than making an honest journalistick appraisal off the game, play it yourself and make ur own judgement !!!
First off, I disagree with the score, this game deserves much higher. But to all the posters before me, do we have to burn some one at the stake (or call him names like 'idiotic', muppet etc) just cause they have a different opinion on issues? In my opinion the game was just mind blowing, even though I have never played any previous MGS games before MGS4, I found the whole plot quite interesting. And maybe since I did not grow up with the MGS franchise, I didn't care too much for the long cut scenes. But then some of those scenes are just too well designed to be qualified as 'boring'. So all in all, even though it takes getting used to the concept, I think most gamers will like it. But then some (like the author) could always find it annoying. No matter how good anything is made, some people will always justifyingly find some thing annoying (its hard to please everyone, right?). Heck, there are people who bitched about HALO as well, and that game's still racking in moolah for MS on LIVE (yours truly being one of the culprits in making MS richer by 50 bux each year). I think MGS will do for the PS3 what Halo did for 360. All in all... good gaming to ya all.
I agree with the review. It is a good game, but Kojima tried to wrap everything up too nicely. The cut scenes are way too long vs. the game play. He might as well just make a movie. Actual game play is short, about 5-7 hrs. of game play(without the cut scenes). I don't know about you, but I like to play the game instead of watching the game. A $60 game with short game play is not worth it, or a high review. Quit crying fanboys.
Are you kidding? WTF were you thinking? Did you actually play the game? Do you think this horrific review will get more users to your site (if so think again- i will never come to this p.o.s again).
I've always wondered why the Motion Picture Academy of Arts never awards or nominates popular films. It's always some pretentious art piece about some event that is never really resolved.
Probably the thing that got you was the part where Old Snake carefully lifts up a weapon to see if it's booby trapped and then when he pulls it off the ground we see what was lying beneath: the director's name (which then fades away). Yeah, I thought that was a little self-indulgent too.
Still, the game is great. You know it and I know it and so do all the player's, so the choice you have made is too join the critic's circle and poo-poo the best game currently available on the PS3 so that you can be respected by your (critic circle) peers.
Well, good luck with that, as for me, I'm looking forward to playing a great game.
Sorry, but I have to completely disagree with this review. To talk about reviews as being objective and without emotion and then take into account your disdain for the cut scenes only makes me wonder about the quality at which you claim this article is journalism. Sorry, but this is MGS, any and all MGS's that came before the fourth were also riddled with said cut scenes and helped flesh out a story so complex that only a true fan could comprehend. To review a game using emotion is not the fault here. What is the fault here is a review written by an anti-fan. Sorry, but this site will no longer gain from my visits. I certainly hope that all who have raid this rubbish will to refrain from ever visiting this garbage site again.
Reviewer,
Don't lose heart over these fanboys. I read your review, and it was fair and accurate. Honestly, it seemed to be very similar to every other review out there, but it simply gave a score that matched the text.
The game looks good, but about as confusing as MGS 2.
And to all the fanboys who claim the series has always had long cutscenes...Metal Gear Solid (1) had only enough cutscenes to tell a great story. Everything since has just been excessive.
I have to agree with the review. I buy games to play them not watch long cut scenes. Some of you have mentioned that 'well you can just skip the cut scenes' however if you skip the cut scenes then the game isn't that long and not worth the money.
This review is a joke.....Wrong in almost every way....Def why most ppl trust gamespot and ign
Ohh, Look it's a site looking for hits. Pretty clever making the deduction of 1 point from 8 even so you can be the first morons in the 7 range. Good job, but too bad for you that no one takes this site remotely seriously. By the way what is this site? I'm not going to stay long enough to find out.
Well, if you think the game was easy and AI a little dumb then why not raise the difficulty?
The cut-scene are too long? you can skip them if you want.
You can customize your weapons and there are 60 of them! i don't see anything about that on your review. Drebin point? anyone
This is not an action game people! you have powerful weapon to kill everybody if you want but the lower the count of kill the better you gonna do on the game score and Drebin points.
This review came up on my Google news. I'm a Mom not a 'fanboy' and I watched my kids play this game the other night. I'm not familiar with the series but what an excellent game. Surely this is what the future of games should be like, should look like. My kids have a folder full of XBox and PS3 games but this one was part movie, part game to the point that it was artful. It was so much more than your garden variety shoot em up. At the end of the day the reviewer can say what he likes because, no matter what my kids ask me to buy, I'm the one with the purse strings and it was well worth the purchase.
So 'Steven' it appears that you got the attention that you wanted. But you've pretty much made a fool of yourself and your site. This is the second MGS game for me, MGS3 being my first, and I in know way consider myself a huge fan, but this is without a doubt one of the best games I have ever played. My very first game was Super Mario World for the SNES and I loved it. But this game makes me feel like no other game has. It is simply brilliant, and the director, Hideo Kojima, did a fantastic job. The seamless cutscene to gameplay was amazing, as were the cutscenes themselves. I thought I was watching a movie most of the time. The detail and shine put into this deserves more than a 79%. I'm not sure if you have some kind of illness, or maybe you just like standing out in the crowd, but this is disrespectfull the the gamer community when there are people out there who read this and may believe it.
'Challenge is also fractured somewhat by such easy access to devastating weaponry, which can get the player out of any scrape without incurring any crippling gameplay penalties for suddenly raising alarms or blowing away guards.'
You speed through a Tactical Espionage Action (i.e. a Stealth Action) game as a simple Action game. You might want to try again and play in the spirit of the game. It sounds like you missed a lot of the gameplay elements which was your primary gripe.
The other posters are right to chew you out. Removing 21% of the games score due to its use of cut scenes (that are nothing new to the series and can be skipped) is inexcusable. I will not be revisiting this site ever again.
What a crappy review. The guy builds it up just to tear it down. MGS4 is without a doubt the greatest game ever made. Thia just goes to show you that any hack can get a job as a reviewer.
I think you have missed the point completely ... A gamer you are not ... sorry ...
I think the problem here is that MGS4 challenges popular conventions and this reviewer is docking it points for that. If gameplay is king then I guess our standard ought to be chess (or maybe tetris since it's *video*games we're talking about). It's obvious that the intention is to entwine gameplay and story. You don't even give consideration to the idea. Instead you reject that (without an explanation more substantive than gameplay is king) and set up your dichotomy of a 'skeletal' single player experience vs. 'nonsensical' cutscenes.
Your charge of brevity is rather confusing. Even if we accept your premise that videogames aren't allowed to place a narrative anywhere near the gameplay itself in terms of importance then you still have the issue of accounting for all of the 'emblems.' They're numerous and to gather them all requires multiple playthroughs which will deliver different experiences (one requires you kill 400 people, another requires you kill 0, etc.). And what about Metal Gear Online? Besides, you didn't complain about COD4's gameplay being short (nor did you neglect to mention it's multiplayer mode). In fact you said if you crank up the difficulty it will last longer. Well have you attempted MGS4 on 'Big Boss Extreme?'
THIS GAME IS TERRIBLE ... I want to have fun when I play .. not watch 20 minutes of cut scenes every 2 minutes ... Battlefield Bad company is MUCH more fun.
how the hell did u become a video game reviewer.. what a joke.. this is my 1st time playing msg series and i find is an awesome experienca.. i mean to give a score of 79 just show me that u didnt even play the game. u just want to stand out from the crowd so people can visit your site, well is going to back fire on u..
all your doing is trying to make your sore ass stick out by giving the game a bad score and trying to create a buzz as 'the site who dared to give a bad score'..congratulations you are now certified assholes...on the flipside, anyone with a brain can look at the top of your page and see 15 different categories, when your spread that thin no one can expect you to do your job with any degree of accuracy or merit..again way to go dipshits, you just became the taint of the internet..d-bags.
'When it comes to videogame reviewing, critics should exercise a degree of professional subjectivity by not appraising games for the sake of peer conformity; nor should they review games while focusing only on appeasing the demands of hardcore franchise fanatics. However, by that token, reviewers should also resist the temptation to unfairly kneecap a high-profile release just for the sake of standing out from the critical crowd.
It’s not an easy line to walk at the best of times.
In short, videogame reviewers should be reviewing for all gamers, providing unbiased evaluations based solely on what is put before them while striving to avoid the often weighted influence of popular opinion. Which leaves this particular reviewer somewhat aghast at the current flood of rampant praise that is being heaped at the feet of Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.'
Okay, I just have 2 questions, what game where you actually playing, and what are you on?
I have never been this sucked into a game since Final Fantasy 7, and I have also never played a Metal Gear one before this. I dont even like FPS or Stealth action games, but this has seriously made me rethink my preferences.
It seriously sounds to me like you wanted publicity, and you even called yourself out on it! I mean i know everyone has preferences and opinions, but saying this game only deserves a mild score at best is a showcase for a severe lack of judgment ability. I'm sure you thought FF7 was only mediocre as well?
The only game that was praised well more than what its worth was Halo 3, but im sure you thought it was the poo.
Grow up and get a real job.
sincerely,
ASS HOLE
'Battlefield Bad company is MUCH more fun'
So you are judging a game you have never played to a game that isn't released yet and expect anyone to care?
Also, game reviewers shouldn't include 2+ paragraphs about how other game reviews are wrong when they are 10x more credible then this website.
(what is this site anyways? And Ive never heard of the reviewer either. . does he even get media copies of the games he plays? Or does he have to buy his own? heh)
Oh lookie, their website isn't even listed on gamerankings.. no reason to care about this then.
Valid criticisms all. Thanks for attempting to bring some balance to the reviews.
Are u kidding me? I played the first game on ps1 now I went out and bought mgs4 and all I could say is wow. Game play 10/ graphics 10/ Sound 10/ your score 0.5 maybe
How did you even get the chance to rate this game? Just quite your job! You don’t deserve to rate, yet talk about this groundbreaking game
This game, is perfect, there is not one aspect of this game that is not compelling, inspiring, and enjoyable. Your review is one of the worst, and most bias reviews I have ever read. I will never visit this site again.
Metal gear solid 4 is one of, if not the best game i have ever played ever. this game is 10/10 material, and if it were mathematically possible, id give it an 11/10.
At last, a review that speaks truth!
I absolutely agree with the review, at least this reviewer has the orbs to call it like it is. This offering by Kojima is so droll, only the truly die-hard snakewannabe otaku can lavish such praise on an otherwise truly plodding offering. Konami should have neutered bloathead Kojima.
Those other so called 'games review' sites don't have what it takes between the legs to give a balanced fair review after having hyped this game endlessly. This game is all hype.
Give this a miss. You'll thank this review for speaking plainly.
People need to understand that Kojima didnt make this game for the players who have never played MGS, He made it for the millions out there who appreciate, his work, and who were excited to see the most amazing game ever made.
Its not about being a fanboy, its about appreciating a wonderful work of art, which kojima did perfectly.
This review is an insult to kojima's and everyone at konami's 4 years of hard work to deliver a game that is not only beautiful, but compelling, and immerse.
I will also not be visiting this site anymore.
Oh and btw, I got a freaking BACKACHE just WATCHING my char on screen hunched over plodding around like a moron.
I had to lol at this authors low score of MGS4 after reading his other reviews such as the one on ralphie mae, it is very clear he is an x-box 360 fanboy that is POed it wont be coming out for his system.
I have both systems so my loyalties lie with no one. I can honestly say that mgs4 is one of the best games of all time and deserves nothing under high 9's.
When Gamespot gives MGS4 a 10 (only its 6th one in12 years)you know the game deserves it.
Are you sure you played Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots? I have played games for 22yrs now, and MGS4 easily ranks at or darn near the top of the heap. The cinematics are all extremely well done, and do nothing in any way take away from the also excellent gameplay. From what I've read from the comments on your article, that feeling is nearly unanimous. I don't know what rock you crawled out from under to review this masterpiece. Maybe you're a 360 fanboy. Either way, your writing shows your complete gaming ignorance.
The game feels like one of those cavernous Chinese buffets. Everything under one roof, but each selection barely average.
You should have known before playing the game that cutscenes would play a huge part. Those who are tolerant of it and have played the previous games can reverse the score. 97%, easily.
I thought the review was fine. Having read plenty of reviews for this title it sounds like everyone agrees this is an excellent title for some people. The reviewer touched on some points that I tend to agree with in terms of the MGS series. The use of cut scenes is tedious and self-indulgent, and also don't make sense to the average gamer. But then again MGS is part of a niche market, I have met very few who think the game series is just 'okay.' The people who like MGS are zealous, as are many devout fans of any given series.
The reviewer is entitled to his opinion, after all we have played games, seen movies and bought products juxtaposed to reviews. I walk away with this sense from the review: The hardcore should be happy, and the average gamer should be wary.
Gamespot and IGN TRUSTWORTHY? What?
The sites give whatever review the publisher pays them to give.
+2 to the guy that said reviewer should quite his job. Excellent.
The first 5 hours of the game you barely play the game, and what you do play just isn't that great.
Where did it become written down that 80% was a bad score. its 8/10. A 10/10 game means its perfect. Nothing could be improved. Everyone everywhere likes this game.
Games with more cutscene time than gameplay have issues. There are 2 parts to telling a great story. 1 is having a good story to tell, 2 is how you tell it. Taking 10 hours to tell a 25 minute story isn't good storytelling, its just ego-stroking.
I'm I right in saying that the people that most agree with those joke of a reviewer is that the cut scenes were to long? I'm I also right in the fact that you can skip every cut scene? It would seem to me that the reviewer and everyone that agrees with him didn't actually play the game. So were does that led us to. Well I say ignore the lot never visit this site again and move on to more legit reviews in the future.
Lol all the sony fanboys bawwing cause a crappy game got a bad review
i hate cutscene's longer than 30 seconds. this game sounds like torture because you'd skip all the story, play the game quicker and miss out on everything people are raving about.
i prefer games before movies.
79% are you kidding me! 1 in 10 will dislike this game because of its excessively long cutscenes. I'm sure if Kojima put maybe 5 min total of storyline the reviews for this game would be 98-100% all across the board. It would keep all the simple minded and the casual gamers happy.
You forget about the previous Metal gear games on cd and dvd formats, that you would have to hear or read the storyline on pages and pages and pages of scrolling text. I don't think I remember anyone complaining about that back then, but anyways I'd take hours and hours of cutscenes over watching text scrolling on a screen via codec ANY DAY! Thank you Blu-Ray....
The game is not worth the money for the casual gamer because there is not enough game play and too much story, Stevie Smith says. Well, he forgets to mention about the online game play where you can have hours and hours of more fun with no CUTSCENES and test your skill vs. real gamers. MG4 is a lot easier on normal mode than the previous metal gears I must admit so i'd encourage everyone to play it on the hard difficulty.
Anyone who reads this article as their first MG4 review should go to more experienced gaming sites like IGN, Gamespot, game pro, etc. where this game is a little more appreciated for it's original gameplay, unique design and creative storytelling. Stevie really should give Kojima's/Konami's masterpiece a little more credit. A casual gamer like Stevie should stick to playing and reviewing games like mario kart.
BTW, MG4 has an avg. a Meta score of 96% so far.
It is one thing for reviewers to bow down to popular opinion, which you suggest, and another thing to go against popular opinion for the sole reason of being noticed. In your case, you clearly fall on the latter, and kudos to you for bringing such heavy traffic in your otherwise worthless post. IGN, EGM, gamespot, and all review sites clearly gave the game a score which the game may deserve or not. But it is very clear that the game does not deserve a 79%.
You assume clearly that metal gear solid may be half movie and half game, but in al honesty, if you hate the cutscenes ao much, why not ignore them and give a score based on a gameplay perspective? Why do you knock off a game just because it has long cutscenes? Your argument is ridiculous. Do you mean to say that MGS would have been better if the cutscenes weren't there? For christ sake heres a suggestion: don't watch them ! The cutscenes are for the fans waiting for some resolution of an otherwise convulted plot established for the series' last 5 games! I would rather watch the cutscenes in MGS than the pathetic excuse for an ending that is HALo 3.
If you strip down MGS of all its cutscenes, you are still left with a 10 hour game thats even longer than call of duty 4 or halo 3; which got all heaps of praises last year despite short and disappointing single player campaigns. The single player in MGS is longer and more varied that both HALO 3 and call of duty 4 put together....
Oh, and ever wondered why your review is not included in metacritic? ITs because its horribly biased. Way to sell your credibility for $5 bucks to microsoft. I think microsoft regrets now ever paying you the 5 bucks since your review does not count on metacritic.
Nice review. It's about time someone said what I've been thinking all along. This game is horrible. The other MGS games were horrible. Ruined is the right word. Well said.
;-P
What a joke of a review. Yeah Metal Gear Solid 4 has long cutscenes but the game is a work of art and is one of the best games I ever played. The scenes in question may have been longer than a usual game but they were necessary and highly, highly, entertaining. It was only until a cutscene was over did I realize how long it was. This is the first and last time I'm visiting this site. You clearly have no idea what your doing.
This review is a joke. Maybe the reviewer is more cut out to review things like toothpaste or deoderant because he obviously cannot see a masterpiece when it is sitting in front of him.
This is the same guy who gave that garbage 'Army of Two' an 80%?
I will NEVER frequent this site again.
In fact, I am going to be sending e-mails to the editor of this website suggesting that he ditch this particular reviewer, I hope everyone else would do the same.
Heh... it's funny that this review is getting such heat. The author repeatedly praises the game elements, but doesn't like the interminable cutscenes. I've read several reviews that say the same thing, but apparently the '79%' is why people are up in arms. What's even more amusing is that some comments doubt the author's 'qualifications' to review a video game.
C'mon people, it's just a number! If you buy a game on the 'Metacritic' value alone, without actually reading the reviews, I can only suggest that you start thinking for yourself. Agree or disagree with what he says, not with the arbitrary number.
This is the first Metal Gear game I have ever played and didn't even look at the other ones. I picked it up because I heard great things about it. I must say this has got to be one of the greatest games I have probably ever played. The cut scenes give it depth and my wife who never watches the games I play sat through the whole thing, she loved it. I even went out and got all the other Metal Gear games I could find, even the PsP version. I do not think the review you gave it was fair at all. Should add around 20 more points to it.
Wow, a bunch of people who don't frequent this website threatening to take their traffic elsewhere.
Finally, a review that is written by someone that tries to be somewhat objective about this games qualities. Every other review I've seen seems to be written by Hideo Kojima fanboys who had already pretty much decided on the score before they played the game.
MGS4 is really good, but it's not 10/10 by a long shot, and the problems I have with it are exactly the ones you list here.
Good review, thanks.
To begin,
I have both a 360 and ps3 and this is the first MGS title I have played.
That being said, is this guy on crack? Like seriously he might need a intervention. Maybe some critics from more credible sites can through one together for him.
I have never been pulled into a story line like this before and while some of the cut scenes seem a bit long killing 21% of a score due to cut scenes you can skip makes you look like you hit the pipe. You admit the sound, graphics, and game play available are wonderful - sorry but that kinda is the whole makeup of most games.
I don't have a physics degree and the tech jargon wasn't hard to follow if you're over 18 and probably easier if you aren't. Maybe it's time to read a book now and then & put down a controller if flashback in a story confuses and upsets you.
Now maybe I am just being a harsh critic of a critic but, let me break down your review the way you did this game.
grammar = 10
reasoning = 6
fairness = 5
length = 10
average worth of review = -79
Congrats in one click you have made me want to never visit your site again for independent game review since it sounds like you work out of the M$ home office - you should have saved some time at the beginning and just added halo3 comparisons throughout the review with links to bungees site .
Later schmuck
Good luck with your e-mails to the editor, Richard. I'm sure they'll be able to use a laugh over lunchtime, come Monday.
This reviewer obviously has no idea how the other games in the franchise works, nor doe sit seem he learned how to press start and skip those 'dreadful' cutscenes...
I find it ridiculious that based on cutscenes alone you would hinder the games score deducting 21%.
I don't expect to visit this site anymore after this.
After finishing the game thrice through, I must say that much of the reviewers critque is borne out. The cutsences, in all their glory, seem to comprise the majority of the game, and the action in the game can seem fleeting and easy. However, I feel that the poor is score is indeed underserved for the mere the fact that this game is and was designed to bring to close a chapter in gaming that many fans have been waiting for. As unfair as it would be to call The Return of the Jedi an unsatifactory moive because it asks viewers to follow the trilliogy, or as unfair as it would be to degenirate any series for relying on the former parts to provide context, this reviewer has fallen into the trap of lambastig the game for providing a close to this franchise which has been know for the issues he picks it on. It is not an accessable game for everyone, nor is it ment to be, as many forms of entertainment media are. And there lies much of its reward, for those of us who have labored alongside Snake for 10 or even 20 years, this game is more of a conclusion to an excellent and beloved series than it is an FPS for the masses. If nothing else, a game like this shows us what can be possible when it transcends both the medium and banal expectations.
People new to the series with attention deficit disorder will sureley complain about the cutscenes. They have no idea about Metal Gear Solid and its evolution. Simply put. For all of us faithful to the series we all know how its more then a game you play through but its an epic story you experience and Kojima stayed true to that vision, hats off to him. I love this game. And this guy writing his review should have done some in depth research on the series and the fans before he posted such an irresponsible review. Dude, you dont have a clue. Dont quit your day job!
It seems that everyone agrees that the reviewers main issue is with the cutscenes. Honestly, that was one of my favorite aspects of the game. They were works of art and i have to say speilberg couldn't have done better himself.
I don't think there could have been a better way to show the, for a brief time, complete hopelessness for the world when Liquid takes control of the SOP system, that was one of my favorite scenes.
Also, how many people bought the $89+ special edition just for the Disc containing EVERY MGS CUTSCENCE (MGS1-4). I did.
What the hell. Monsters & Critics are one of the Dumbest sites ever. you site is rubbish, unlike IGN, Gamespot and N4G. people only know about your site because of N4G. your no bodies. your review is just a big piece of SH!T. Gamespot 10/10, Gamepro 10/10 & IGN 10/10. okay then. three unbiased sites, all in the past liking Xbox more Playstation but they all Review a Prefect Score. Famitsu 40/40, only 12 game to do so. Prefect Score And last but not least. Microsoft them selfs. MSN UK Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of the Patriots 10/10. your complete n00bs.
not coming to Xbox or PC, to bad. what a shame your missing out. The game is amazing. Only to other games have given me more Pleasure. The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time & The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess.
like SONY says
THIS IS LIVING
to bad your missing out.
I fear this reviewer has completely missed the point of MGS4, he's obviously turned up to the party late, pissed off that everyone else has drunk the beer & moved in on the girls. MGS4 wraps up the SOLID storyline, its wot MGS fans have been waiting for, its what Kojima has been working to create for 20 years, did u think he was just gonna put some small sections of dialogue & leave the rest out?. I don't know what the reviews is so miffed about?, what was he expecting?, he's either never played an MGS game before or is very ignorant... or the worst case scenario... just putting this review up to get some hits!....how do you sleep at night?
you guys suck monkey balls, trying to get 'critical' is out of place here, MGS4:
is the most cinematically represented game, most visually impressive game, most deep-gameplay-wise game, that this industry have produced
Either you are jealous of Kojima-san or you are a bunch of half assed X-Bots. which is quite shameful.
FOR WE ARE MANY.
Just a note.... im not with the guy above....xbots?, come on how old are you?.
I've never played any MGS game before, and I loved this one. I loved the cut scenes and am now playing it through for a second time (something i only ever do when i really enjoy the game). Granted it doesn't warrant the 100% scores it's been getting everywhere ... but 79% is insanely low.
Hi Steve,
I’d like to say I found your review to be extremely well written and well presented. As for it’s accuracy I can’t comment - seeing as I’ve not played the game. However, I feel regardless of weather you are ‘wrong’ or ‘right’ that a review is a personal opinion, and one hopes it’s written by an experienced voice with the depth and knowledge to comment on such matters. I myself used to write reviews for a video gaming magazine but now write scripts for Hollywood. While I admire your writing and the way which you portray ‘blaspheming’ against the MG hardcore, I’d be interested to know what your credentials area as a reviewer, and what other reviews you have written for such big releases. This being my first time to the site it would be good to know it’s writers are qualified to be given the privilege to pass comment on things which are dear to many of us…
That said I still stand by my statement that it is refreshing to read a well presented opinion that goes against the grain of public opinion, after all we all live in a democracy…, right?
PS – I live in the UK where EDGE magazine who are recognised as being the most ‘highbrow’ gaming mag, gave MG (admittedly I didn’t read the text as closely as your review) a 7, 8 or maybe 9 out of ten. I think if memory serves me correctly the thrust of their review was MG was not the game it could have been…
Anyhow – Cheers and GameOn!

You're a moron. this game is ace and youhave no idea at all. go find a proper job as reviewing games is not your forte, HOTSHOT
I completely disagree with this reviewer. I not only read his inaccurate article, but all the comments on the article. Im glad to say most of you agree with me, but for those who agreed to this article, take a gander at this. Every one of you including the reviewer is what everyone has been saying you all are... a casual gamer. You guys play from easy to normal, play the game, and be done with it. That is why you guys never realize the rating of your performance at the end of the game. Check this out.
Before you critize the game, you must beat the game at its fullest potential. In this case the Big Boss Rating Emblem. 0 kills, 0 alert phases, 0 rations, regains, and noodles, most importantly, beat the game in under 5 hours on The Boss extreme difficulty. I see many of you complained about the shorten game play, well there you have it, its called a challenge. I know everyone who agreed with the reviewer will never try for this challenge because just like this reviewer, a challenge is not for a casual gamer.
Dont get me wrong, Im not jumpin down any of your throats, but you should think twice about leaving a comment on a game you never and probably will never master. If indeed you do master it and still feel the same way, then you are definetly a hard core gamer, and deserve to be known for it. Cause quite honestly, this is a very very difficult challenge, and no one should mark this game for its cover, even me. Thats why I haven't commented on this game yet. Have fun casual gamers.

Every reviewer is entitled to his or her own opinion.
However...
Thats all it is at the end of the day, an opinion.
Fortunately I'm really enjoying MGS4 still haven't completed it yet though.
This game was 1 of 3 big hitters, Killzone 2 and Gran Turismo 5 (not prologue) being the other two reasons for me buying a PS3 in the first place.
AWESOME 10/10
Whats wrong with being an X-BOT? :)
Do NOT agree with this review. Play MGS4 once, and yes, it's sort of a schlep having to get thru all the cutscenes (esp. for people new to the series, like myself). However, play it a second time, and the 'cutscene debate' no longer exists. Why? Because you can SKIP THEM!!! That's why. And yes, there are countless reasons to come back to this game over and over and over again. The rewards system and cool weapons (e.g., mantis doll and solar gun) are just two of the many reasons why you'll want to master this game. The less than perfect AI and heavy weaponry, which make it relatively easy (in lower levels) to mow down enemies, does not affect the gameplay if what you want to accomplish is a No Kill and No Alert-phase playthrough. Afterall, this game is not a straight shooter. (But try telling that to the average gamer who just wants to kill everything in sight.) The satisfaction in this game, mostly comes from the various ways in which you can sneak past the enemy, and silently take them down if necessary. In the future, for those reviewing games, make a list of the games you like, so that we may know where your opinions come from. Also, I suggest that with games like MGS4, it may be encessary to play the entire game twice, or even three times, before posting a final verdict.
This guy is an IDIOT! Albeit, a very articulate and charasmatic 'fuchi-face' chump! Dude, are you gay? This guy only played the game once before he posted this review--a patzer at best. So you say, incur no no penalties by raising alerts? What freakin' game did you play, Assassin's Creed?I smell CHICKEN EMBLEM!!! This game has more replay value than what your frail and sloppy little hands know what to do with. You wouldn't play chess once and be done with it. I've played this game 3 times over and have yet to master it. And YES! To me that's worth more than the $60 bucks I spent on this game. Do us all a favor, go jerk off with all your Halo and GTA 4 buddies.
You certainly made your money and set yourself a cut above the rest of the world in bashing a series that from the beginning (ps1) has stood a shoulder above All of the others (mabye minus gta?). These games have always had long cut scenes (and sometimes ones you couldn't skip...) but in a game the reason for the particular type of gameplay is the storyline, you are a monkey (well, snake) running around with a gun otherwise. You need a REASON and the storyline, presumably, satisfies this requirement. The Metal Gear series has been through so much and to the core gamer it's also the storyline, as well as the gameplay, that inspires them to go out and pay so much. This game [with its 'labouriously' long cut scenes) would only seem to inspire first timers to pursue the other games (and thier respective storylines) which have satiated me for so long. I haven't even played MGS4 and the other three have led to my defense of a game whose history dictates my expectations. To quote > Paul Murray Jun 22nd, 2008 - 19:33:17 >

Odd. I thought the review was right on. I hadnt played any of the MGS until i got this game. The surrounding hoopla certainly had me expecting more. I did not get a GAME to watch 2 hours of mostly useless video. I want to sneak around, blow things up, drive, shoot, throw, stab, etc, etc. I do not want to sit through a bunch of video. The cut scenes added absolutely nothing. Was I getting 'points' for watching those? I had no idea what they added. The psychologist lady was useless. The 'calls' in the middle of, or right after, action were annoying. The cutesy robot was mostly useless. On the other hand, I liked the weapon variety, the bosses (even though they were all _exactly_ the same after freeing them from their suits), the action, the movement, the gameplay. In short, if there had been more gameplay and less chick-drama, the game woulda been much better.
I am an avid Metal gear Solid fan, and I somewhat agree with your verdict. I also believe they left the hardcore MGS tactical espionage fan in the dust. They needed more of a fan base to appeal to so they had Ryan Payton do it. Though I don't think the story is confusing in the least. I would have given the game an 86%.
