I have to say i can't agree with this review score at all. I am not a true Metal Gear Solid fan but found this to be one of the best games i have played. Cut scenes that add to the game, plus great gameplay sections, especially when the game is played on the harder levels it becomes a tactical affair adding even more depth to the gameplay. I could list many more positives but i don't think i need to as most people will have already made up their mind up on how good this game is. Sorry but seventy nine percent is quite far of the mark, you need to add at least ten percent to the score to get it anywhere close to correct.

I have to say that I don't agree with this review in the least. I have not played any of the other metal gear games and still found the story to be comprehendable and the cutscenes to be very entertaining and funny. I enjoyed the game from beginning to end. It may not be perfect and I can see how some might not like the long cutscenes but this review is rubbish.. Sorry

I have read the review for a second time and find nothing you have written corresponding with the experiences i had. You are critical of Kojima about being self indulgent but if i am correct have not all the Metal Gear solid games had these kind of cut scenes. He has every right to make it for the fans as they are the ones who have purchased the games in the past and i am not sure attracting new fans was his intention. Personally i found the boss battles to be very good and a lot less predictable than most other games. I am going to stop now as i feel you started out with negative views about this game and continued them in your review. Your lack of detail about drebin points, the MK2, the camosuit, how the difficulty levels make you play the game in different ways etc, maybe makes me think you are a casual reviewer looking for casual games.

Steve I could understand your annoyances about the cutscenes being not to your liking, but to shave off 21 points when you can simply hit start and skip to get back into the gameplay is ... rather tepid argument at best. If you aren't fond of it as a movie, than use the Kojima 'implemented' skip feature. He certainly isn't forcing you to watch through his 'techno-babble.' And btw, the information he presents on cloning and nanotechnology is actually quite real and isn't just pulled out of his arse. Don't believe his explanation about a premature aging snake? Read up on the lifespan of Dolly, the first cloned sheep.

79%? Did you type that backwards hotshot? Metal Gear Solid 4 is easily one of the best installments to the Metal Gear series and definitely one of Kojima's finest works. Every aspect of a great game is evident in MGS4 - and without a doubt maintains a fantastic story line that is twenty-one years in the making! Not to throw around any spoilers but the conclusion is epic with one of the greatest show-downs displayed in gaming history. To give Metal Gear Solid 4 a review of a 79% is more than a mistake, it's idiotic.

Well this review once again shows us that the world of online journalism is plagued by complete muppets who will do ANYTHING to try and get a hit on their website.

The entire review seems to take it as a personal affront that this game has long and involved cut scenes. Wake up! That's a been a trait of every single Metal Gear Game, its not particular to this one! Everyone else on the planet seems to enjoy this (as well they should), but should you not have the wit or intelligence to enjoy it for what it is, you can simply press the start button and continue with the game. Unlike your completely inaccurate assertions, the gameplay portion of this game is significantly loger than the cut scene elements. In a game that takes about 18 hours to complete, you could cut all the cut scenes and still have 11 hours of gameplay - significantly more gameplay than all the other tripe this reviewer no doubt lavishes praise on.

Far from getting some kind of respect for 'bunking the trend' your review has shown us all quite clearly that you have no idea at all of what makes a good and compelling game experience. I've played just about every major game since the inception of video gaming, and have developed major AAA games for over 15 years. This title, whilst not perfect, represents just about the pinnacle of evolution of video gaming as a moving art form. When the rest of the world sees something different from you, its usually because you're not seeing with any clarity, and your words demonstrate your lack of credibility perfectly, being as contradictory and as superficial as they are.
We have all learned that that your opinion is completely worthless, and that when seeking an objective review of video gaming product, coming to this site is a waste of time. You have my utter contempt sir, and well deserved it is too..

I don't think this is a fair review at all. Mr. Smith, had you played previous MGS games you would understand that Kojima's indulgences were necessary to piece together the series' exposition as a whole. While it's understandable to be frustrated about long drawn-out cut scenes they are essential to further the story, thereby engrossing the player even more (if you were actually paying attention). Now, if you don't know the background of the MGS series, as is apparently the case, then you should perhaps not be reviewing this at all. This is not a game for casuals new to the MGS series necessarily. It is the final installment of an excellent franchise, so obviously prior knowledge would help. Hideo Kojima is, as always, serving his fans.

Who are you... i have never heard of this site before. I guess you did your job and got the hits that you were looking for. Also, I see what you did there with the score. You just looked at Metacritic and found the lowest score for MGS4 and scored the game 1 point below the lowest score, so people would go to your site to read what the hell the idiot was talking about.

Your moneyhat from Microsoft is in the mail.

Stevie Smith, your review deserves a 79%.

the eviewer asks that games be reviewed on there merits and not on the reviewers personal tastse, then uses the review as his own personal soapbox 4 his take on how games should or shouldnt b made, mgs4 is undoughtedly next gen entertainment of the highest caliber. its a shame people like the reviewer in question r more concerned with there own recognition than making an honest journalistick appraisal off the game, play it yourself and make ur own judgement !!!

First off, I disagree with the score, this game deserves much higher. But to all the posters before me, do we have to burn some one at the stake (or call him names like 'idiotic', muppet etc) just cause they have a different opinion on issues? In my opinion the game was just mind blowing, even though I have never played any previous MGS games before MGS4, I found the whole plot quite interesting. And maybe since I did not grow up with the MGS franchise, I didn't care too much for the long cut scenes. But then some of those scenes are just too well designed to be qualified as 'boring'. So all in all, even though it takes getting used to the concept, I think most gamers will like it. But then some (like the author) could always find it annoying. No matter how good anything is made, some people will always justifyingly find some thing annoying (its hard to please everyone, right?). Heck, there are people who bitched about HALO as well, and that game's still racking in moolah for MS on LIVE (yours truly being one of the culprits in making MS richer by 50 bux each year). I think MGS will do for the PS3 what Halo did for 360. All in all... good gaming to ya all.

I agree with the review. It is a good game, but Kojima tried to wrap everything up too nicely. The cut scenes are way too long vs. the game play. He might as well just make a movie. Actual game play is short, about 5-7 hrs. of game play(without the cut scenes). I don't know about you, but I like to play the game instead of watching the game. A $60 game with short game play is not worth it, or a high review. Quit crying fanboys.

Are you kidding? WTF were you thinking? Did you actually play the game? Do you think this horrific review will get more users to your site (if so think again- i will never come to this p.o.s again).

I've always wondered why the Motion Picture Academy of Arts never awards or nominates popular films. It's always some pretentious art piece about some event that is never really resolved.

Probably the thing that got you was the part where Old Snake carefully lifts up a weapon to see if it's booby trapped and then when he pulls it off the ground we see what was lying beneath: the director's name (which then fades away). Yeah, I thought that was a little self-indulgent too.

Still, the game is great. You know it and I know it and so do all the player's, so the choice you have made is too join the critic's circle and poo-poo the best game currently available on the PS3 so that you can be respected by your (critic circle) peers.

Well, good luck with that, as for me, I'm looking forward to playing a great game.

Sorry, but I have to completely disagree with this review. To talk about reviews as being objective and without emotion and then take into account your disdain for the cut scenes only makes me wonder about the quality at which you claim this article is journalism. Sorry, but this is MGS, any and all MGS's that came before the fourth were also riddled with said cut scenes and helped flesh out a story so complex that only a true fan could comprehend. To review a game using emotion is not the fault here. What is the fault here is a review written by an anti-fan. Sorry, but this site will no longer gain from my visits. I certainly hope that all who have raid this rubbish will to refrain from ever visiting this garbage site again.

Reviewer,

Don't lose heart over these fanboys. I read your review, and it was fair and accurate. Honestly, it seemed to be very similar to every other review out there, but it simply gave a score that matched the text.

The game looks good, but about as confusing as MGS 2.

And to all the fanboys who claim the series has always had long cutscenes...Metal Gear Solid (1) had only enough cutscenes to tell a great story. Everything since has just been excessive.

I have to agree with the review. I buy games to play them not watch long cut scenes. Some of you have mentioned that 'well you can just skip the cut scenes' however if you skip the cut scenes then the game isn't that long and not worth the money.
