Thank goodness for appeals.

Ever since the Entertainment Software Ratings Board doled out a condemning AO rating for Manhunt 2, we’ve feared the worst-that we’d never get to play the game.

Looks like that won’t be the case as Manhunt 2 developer Rockstar Games announced today that a "modified version" of Manhunt 2 has received an M for Mature rating for ages 17 and over, and will be released on the PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 2, and Wii in North America on October 31.

After Manhunt 2 received the AO rating, publisher Take-Two put the game on indefinite hold while it "explored its options”, though in the meantime Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick promised shareholders and journalists that the title would be released.

The company wouldn’t say what changes were made to earn the lower rating, though it will ship with the following ESRB assigned content descriptors: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs.

Now, this all may be good news to US gamers but the game is still banned in the UK and Ireland, which is something Take Two and Rockstar are appealing.

Keep it tuned here for more info on Manhunt 2 as the story unfolds.
