Set some 50 years after the climactic events of 2001's Red Faction, original developer Volition Inc. (Saints Row, The Punisher) is forging ahead with Red Faction: Guerrilla, looking to push back the limits of destruction-based gameplay in an exciting open-world sci-fi action shooter.
“Red Faction is one THQ’s most successful and critically acclaimed original franchises to date, with a huge global base of loyal fans waiting to join the new revolution,” said Brad Carraway, director of global brand management at THQ. “With the game’s unique pairing of true physics-based destruction, fast-paced guerrilla warfare style combat, and a massive world to explore – Red Faction: Guerrilla will redefine the limits of open-world gaming.”
According to Mike Kulas, president of Volition Inc., Red Faction: Guerrilla will expand the destruction elements already synonymous with the Red Faction series, while stretching the boundaries of next-gen gaming via “a massive, terra-formed Mars where gamers can literally tear down the enemy EDF [Earth Defense Force] presence brick by brick.”
Other new elements set to appear in Red Faction: Guerrilla include a third-person perspective, a full cover system to encourage guerrilla-style tactics, and a hugely diverse game environment for players to explore. In terms of narrative thread, players will step into the boots of an insurgent fighter with the newly re-established Red Faction movement as they battle for liberation from the oppressive Earth Defense Force. Destructive Martian confrontations with EDF forces will see players moving from the desolate mining outpost of Parker through to the gleaming EDF capital city of Eos.
Beyond the fully destructible and improvised weaponry of the single-player campaign, Red Faction: Guerrilla will also offer up “a robust multiplayer” experience, which will feature numerous destruction-based gameplay modes.
Sounds interesting. We’ll keep you posted on more Red Faction: Guerrilla news.
