With Sony Computer Entertainment having recently revealed manufacturing costs associated with its PlayStation 3 have virtually halved in the console’s opening year at market, it is not especially surprising to see rumours of (yet another) retail price drop popping up across the Internet. Credit: Nigt.Specifically, in light of PS3 per-unit manufacturing costs presently sitting at around $400 USD (having dropped from $800 USD), a number of posters at SlickDeals.net are this week suggesting that Sony is preparing to shift the 40GB SKU to $299 USD this coming January 28.While pinches of salt should remain firmly grasped at this juncture, SlickDeals does have a history of predicting upcoming price reductions in the videogame industry. While primarily a wide-ranging electronics site, SlickDeals successfully broke the news of both prior PS3 price reductions, and also last year’s initial Xbox 360 price drop.However, despite the crossed fingers of prospective PlayStation 3 consumers still perching precariously on the next-gen fence, there doesn’t appear to be any strategic reason for Sony to apply another price cut to its home console right now – not least because neither of its main market rivals are making significant industry waves in the traditionally calm post-Christmas lull.Of course, Sony might just drop the price as a retail bombshell to shake 2008 into action, but given that both Microsoft and Nintendo are in a much better position in terms of matching any such move... we'd keep this one filed under 'unlikely' until leaked retail flyers start fluttering onto Web sites.

That sounds pretty unlikely, why do they want to repeatedly sell consoles for a loss? as for the picture that is used, the eject button is...not really there is it?

Because Bob, software (games) sales is where the cash is at, the more people who have the console the more games are likely to be bought thus more money is to be made.

Halo 3 smashed all records, even Spiderman 3 for the most money making entertainment thing ever! and I hate that game.
