The PS3 might have a bit better graphics than the 360 (so far only if you look hard). Is that even a surprise? It came a year late. Processors are supposed to double in performance every 18 months by Moore's law. I am not seeing 50% better graphics from PS3, instead it is 50% more expensive (depending on how you look). Why? Because Sony thought that the success of Blu-Ray was more important than getting an affordable system out. That shows their priorities.

The question now is - is it worth the extra money? Will people pay 50% more than a not-too-cheap 360 to get a slight edge in graphics? Apparently not from the sales figures. PS2 had a MUCH larger game library than the original XBox and consequently people did not care even though PS2 had the least power of the last gen. Now the roles are reversed. PS3 costs more, came late to the fight, lost exclusives, raised game prices and even lost goodwill.

As for me, I am willing to spend $600 to upgrade my PC that I can use for other things, but not on ANY game system. I have a couple of last gen systems that I will use till the prices come down. Besides, the reason I got those consoles was because I stopped caring about graphics which were much better on my PC compared to the last gen.

Contd ...

Protein folding? This is the old SETI screensaver idea. PS3 costs about $15/month in power consumption if you leave it running all the time. $180 per year. But it could work if Sony would give credit (even store credit in their online store) to PS3 owners that goes well beyond the power consumption.

hardcoreware.net/ps3-power-usage-during-foldinghome/

Neither is this anything unique to PS3. Stanford has this stuff for just about every system worth naming (Windows, Mac, Linux).

And why should I care if PS3 can run Linux or IM. Again, these things are better done on a PC which I can have total control of than a proprietary box like PS3.

>> Let us know your thoughts, we'll keep you posted if we hear news that NASA has selected the PS3 to operate any the future space missions.

Why not? :-). The early space missions went in with the power of a couple of Commodore-64s. Even a Wii should do just fine. Besides, it won't weigh too much or guzzle precious power :-).

Power consumption comparison during active processing.

This stupid kind of 'news' is pattetic, why do you think you are in the right to bash other company (sony) just because you think you know what they are doing?!! Stop it, I can take no more with this 'Internacional Sport to bash Sony), they are making the best games we will ever see in nextgen consoles, they invested Billions to develop this hardware, they are creating Home wich will be amazing, they and we (who have a PS3) are helping the science, if Sony is planning to take advantage of PS3 power to make some good deals for them I think they are smart by doing that, consumer will probably be payed to use their PS3's for commercial tasks.

What I mean is that PS3 is an outstanding machine that borned some months ago and it seems there was a BOOMMM of pseudojournalists that all in a sudden think they can bash Sony and PS3 just because it costs $600, guess what, a Mercedes costs lot more, there you have, something new to bash about.

I think some of you are missing the point of the article.
Is Sony going to give the PS3 the support it requires or start concentrating on marketing the cell processor as a new commercial commodity?
I personally Don't have a PS3 so I cant comment on its quality of games or multimedia capabilities. But I do own a 360 and a Wii.
I had the 360 from launch and it has gone through several firmware revisions. This has enabled extra content and improved performance. The same goes for my Wii. However if Sony are distracted by the possibilities of a better market, i.e. medical research, will they perhaps move their resources away from the gaming sector and start to develop industrial software for it?
There is no doubt that the PS3 is a powerful machine but unless it receives 100% attention to make it 'the ultimate gaming console' it may just end up being the jack of all trades. Capable of doing many tasks but not excelling in any.

@ Tw0nkface

It's a PLAY-STATION... P-L-A-Y... Sony is one of the biggest companies out there, they make some of the best gadgets and they work at many areas to the professional sector, playstation brand is part of Sony Computer Entertainment, it's obviuos Sony made Playstation3 to play games, but that don't exclud the possiibility to do some other things, in my opinion a multy task console is better than a sollo game console, playstation needs to prove nothing in the game sector, they make terrific games, actually most of the best games (GOW, GT, Heavanly Sword, ratched&Clanck, etc etc... PS3 lyke Wii or X360 has ad Firmware updates that have also enhanced the capabilities of the machine, and I'm sure that will keep happening, look at PSP now and when it was launched, BIG differences hã?
What frustrastes me is that people like you, who don't have a PS3 are influenciated by this kind of sensacional journalism and then take conclusions without testing the hardware or even give Sony a chance to make their moves, I hava a PS2 and a PSP and they are both great consoles that worked well all the time and gaved me lots of happy moments, PS3 will be no different, actually I'm enjoing my PS3 A LOT, it's a beautifull peace of hardware that makes the most amazing things, there are lots of good games now like Motorstorm or Resistance, and better games are comming.

PS3 was designed from ground zero to be the best gaming console out there, and it is, it is the best balanced console, if it can do more things that only gaming thats a better thing, not worse, and Sony isn't just one person, some are concentrated in the games and others are studing other possibilities, I don't see why that bother you journalists so much.

I'm Portuguese so my English sucks I know... sorry for that, try to write back in portuguese if you can...

the games that come first doesn't alway show the best os the system;ps3 is using 20% of its power right now, from the games that just came out.
360 is alredy using 85-90%,because is has on of does spicial tools to create gemes and is looking like a ps3,this is a fact do a research if u like.
ps2 didn't have that, but later it had good tools to create great lookin games like: Black,killzone,GTA-4,and the others.

With all that power comes difficulty to harness it. With that comes record-high Production costs, studios will attempt to rival movie quality effects, and they'll work on games longer. More time to create the product, more money spent on the product, higher sale price, and more ways to nickle and dime you (paid add ons, etc). Don't get me wrong one bit: I'm a HUGE fan of graphics, but I'm also a BIGGER fan of gameplay, and I'm not interested in playing a really pretty game that suffers in gameplay because the studio couldn't AFFORD good producers because they blew their budget on development costs.

Truly even though the PS3 has better graphics and proccessor and etcetera, it's all about the games, would you sereously buy a PS3 even though its a couple of hundred dollars more and so far the exclusives have been basicly handed to the the 360?
