Censorship is censorship, and NY is no stranger to this. NY has banned some art, some demonstrations, anything that they don't want to happen, in the name of 'security'.
Even though you can't ban a game in the name of security, you can assert that the game will cause people to act out in the city, and therefore, it becomes a security matter.
Pre-emptive guilt by association.
The bottom line is simple though, these games are rated for ADULTS, just like R rated movies. If you let your 5 year-old watch the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, it may also negatively affect them. But it's your fault as the parent, not the 5 year-old, and not the movie company, if that happens.
So what's the difference? Some people can't get past the thought that video games are just for kids, even though the majority of gamers are 20-30 years old. It's just politricks.
politics ! way more messed up then any video game LOL
I like how they complain about '... earning points by injuring/killing Police Officers'. Is that all they care about? So they think its ok to earn points when you can go up to a homeless dude or a prostitute and beat the s*** out of them? They only care about their own kind, they don't give a **** about anyone else.
What about the police officers in FL who brutally beat a black man, then sodomized him with a lamp-post?
Fascist pigs. They're worse than the general public as far as decency and restraint.
Ladies and Gentlemen, boys and girls, I would like to welcome you all to history one oh one.
The whole backlash against GTAIV is nothing more then history repeating itself. Rather then it being comics books, as such was the case back in the fifties, it is now video games. Funny huh? You would think people would learn by now. Strangely enough, it's those people who's very own comic books where taken away from them that is now trying to ban video games from those of us responsible enough to enjoy them.
In the end it's all about freedom of speech, blah blah blah...but in truth the simple thing is, if you don't like it don't buy it. More so, if you're a parent that is going to rant and rave about how GTA is this and GTA is that...I tell you what. QUIT WHINING! I shouldn't have to be denied my little sick moment of entertainment just because of your inability to manage your own children's lives. Quit waiting for the government to babysit your children. It's YOUR JOB to do that...if you can't, well maybe having kids was your mistake. I hope GTA and it's makers keep testing the limits, and breaking the rules! I'll be home rubbing my hands together in glee watching all you closed minded sheep wa-wa-whining away with your pick-it signs while your kids stay home and do crack because your to busy to keep an eye on them.
Class dismissed!
well i think its about about time someone made an actual representation of new york. i've never been there but from what i here its true.
gta rocks like hell!
My husband and I both love all of the GTA titles.
And as for the violence...
It's a game. I don't know how to state it any more clearly. It's something we do for fun. Would we do this in real life? No, of course not.
Children shouldn't be playing it, but it's fine for adults. If we're worried about the violence then I guess Scorsese needs to quit making movies and we should take numerous shows off television.
These people really need to check their priorities.
GTA shows how stupid killing cops and random pedestrians would be. Anyone who has played this game knows that when you start killing innocent people and cops, the cops come and usually kick your ass. Sometimes this can be fun, but you almost always end up dead. Anyone who would actually do this in real life is an idiot or has a death wish (these people need professional health and would be a risk regardless of GTA). As for the rest of us the only harm that comes is wasting countless hours in front of your TV.
I think it's funny to hear you people complaining about gaming being a form of freedom of speech that should not be infringed, and then in the same breath complain about officials in New York exercising their right to free speech! Let's try and not be so hypocritical.
One last thing: Comparing a video game where the player manipulates the death of a police officer or a prostitute to win a game is completely different than watching a movie.
Yeah, I dont seem to remember New York whining when King Kong climbed the empire state building and that was real, this is just a game.
first off... GLM, shut the hell up! when it comes down to what everyone is talking about, movies and video games are just the same. second... its just a game. if you dont like it, dont play it and shut up!
the godfather game was set in NYC they didnt moan about that.
we are not realy killing real NYC citzens so who cares.
I think it's funny how city officials can be displeased at the spectacular job Rockstar have done in recreating their magnificent city.
Sure, the game is focused on the criminal underworld of the city, but there have been many other media that depict New York in a similar fashion.
Apparently:
Games about crime set in New York = bad
Well established media (movies, books, music, etc.) about crime set in New York = good
