Original launched in late 2004, the system's dual screens, touch screen and voice-recognition capabilities revolutionized the gaming industry. Many were skeptical of Nintendo's plans, convinced that it would go the way of Nintendo's failed Virtual Boy. Fortunately for The Big N, gamers worldwide loved the system's unique gaming experiences and the rest, as they say, is history.
As of Dec. 31, 2008, there were 83 DS titles whose global shipment exceeded 1 million. Seven of these titles topped 10 million. New games like Nintendogs and Brain Age quicky climbed the sales charts, while traditional games like New Super Mario Bros. and Mario Kart DS showed why they're still relevant even after all these years.
The third iteration of the Nintendo DS hardware, Nintendo DSi, launches in the United States three and a half weeks from now on April 5. Nintendo DSi includes two cameras and the ability to record, manipulate and play sound files.
