Fanta, Daylight Savings and “Alien Races” On Last Week Tonight with John Oliver VIDEOS

TV Rewind: Episode 205 of “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” which aired Sunday, March 8 at 11:00p.m., ET/PT on HBO.

Below is a clip from episode 205. This week’s topics included the Department of Justice’s release of a report regarding ongoing racial biases in the Ferguson police department and courts, Israel’s ad campaigns for its upcoming elections, Fanta’s 75th anniversary and its origins, and the lack of voting rights in U.S. island territories.

We loved his ripping into the German creation of “Daylight Savings Time.” Thanks Germany, for Fanta and this stupid thing!

Fanta for those unaware, was created by Nazi Germany:

As far as Daylight Savings Time: It is NOT for farmers. Today’s daylight saving was actually invented by the Germans to save electricity during World War I. As Oliver says in the video, “Cows don’t care what time it is, because they’re cows. And cows are idiots.”

And really, how IS this still a thing we endure?

There are no net power savings either in these times: “Because switching on a lamp an hour later in the summer doesn’t really matter when you’re blasting an air conditioner and staying up all night psychotically scrolling through your ex’s Instagrams.”

The show is the only weekly news-oriented comedy series to be presented on Sunday night. Taped in New York a few hours before it debuts on HBO, the show features a mix of Oliver’s topical commentary on the previous week’s events, pre-taped pieces and occasional guests.
