Fall 2014 face preview, we found the best new drugstore and department store finds for a cooler and more serious back-to-school or work palette that will make you look sophisticated and chic, without making you poor.
August is the month we usually wear the LEAST amount of makeup.
The dog days. Hot, humid…we’re worn out and jealous of our friends who get to “vacation” for weeks …while we show up for work and feel the energy levels drop. It seems like the rest of the world also checks out in August and somewhere everyone is sipping a cocktail on a beach or by a pool but us!
The lull gave us some time to be super sleuths in the stores. I took a detour to a new Target on Lindero in Westlake, CA. and to Nordstroms off Topanga Canyon Road in Woodland Hills, CA. and checked out some new palettes, and I was impressed with some new shades. Check out some versatile pretty new colors:
What it is: Lip Glacé ($25) is a sleek delivery of 13 New Shades. 26 Shades Total. A high-shine, perfectly pigmented lip gloss with rich, long-lasting color and brilliant shine that creates the appearance of fuller lips. Any skin tone is virtually enhanced by creating a subtle contrast in texture.
Why we liked it: Lightweight, pleasant taste, mild barely there smell and the color acts more like a gloss/stain than a gloss. Not too shiny so it’s great for day wear. The tube of Lip Glacé looks much darker in the flesh than the picture, but it smashes out sheer and plummy. Color stays on.
What it is: NYX Extra Creamy Round Lipstick is AMAZING classic lipstick. The mineral-based emollient formula offers a beautiful velvet texture, saturated color and it resists wear and smudging. It’s your go-to lipstick. From Pure Nude to Pink Lyric to Chic Red, Round Lipstick is available in a jaw-dropping variety of shades. I adore this line of lipstick. (At Target it cost me just $3.99, at the website it is $4-caveat – Target as a more limited shade selection)
Why we liked it: Thalia (also check out Rea and Hades) is one of those colors a wide swath of women can wear. Light complected to deeper skins, it’s a neutral cool nude mauve that has enough brown base to it. It looks smart and chic on.
What it is: Natural (LG122) Glossy ($5) Light brown with pink undertones and no frost. They make 39 shades of gloss.
Why we liked it: Everybody needs a good nudie rich, dense gloss that can pair with an earthen lip-liner for a fast sexy pout. The angled applicator is wonderful as well. Sometimes you gotta go nude and shiny. Weekend mouth. Sexy date mouth. After gym mouth. This one is the shizznit.
What it is: Laura Mercier Cheek Mélange ($42) features a selection of complementary shades that add natural, glowing radiance to your cheeks. The versatile formula can be used on your face, cheeks and eyes and gives any skin tone a natural flush of color.
Why we liked it: This is brilliant as a finisher over a bronzer or as a flush of color. Works on a wide variety of skintones. It is not “blushy” like old fashioned cheek colors. Apply with a cheek color brush beginning at the top of the cheekbone then brushing downward toward the apple of the cheek in a rounded, horseshoe shape. Has a shimmery (not frosted) gleamy finish to the skin. Stunning on.
What it is: Simple stroke on liner ($4.50) that takes your look from blah to glam in seconds with this super-pigmented eye liner that highlights eyes with electrifying color. The fine brush tip allows for precision application, and can be used to create lines of varying thickness. Go subtle or go glam.
Why we liked it: Eyeliner can make you feel like a genius or a total klutz depending on the applicator. This one applies easily and is manageable. The brush is just right so you can control the thickness and the flick. So important! The color is gorgeous- a bronze copper brown that looks hot on everyone, from light skins to deep complected ladies, this one is so useful in the makeup bag. Sexy light catching at night. For the price, just do it!
What it is: This pot of ultrasmooth, waterproof eye liner applies with the ease and silky-smooth finish of a gel and precision of a liquid liner. Smudge and transfer-resistant, the long-wearing formula goes on fool-proof with an angled Eye Liner Brush.
Why we liked it: This is the splurge, your fashion color for fall, the deep smoky forest green that is the color burst that really pops eyes. The cream eyeliner is wonderful and you can smudge it immediately for a diffused color, and it stays in place all day. You cannot cry this one off. It is the best green eyeliner I have ever found.
What it is: A made in USA lightweight makeup that blurs the look of lines, wrinkles and uneven texture with an SPF of 18
Why we liked it: Bought at Target for $11.99, this affordable new makeup felt like silken velvet, and was instantly a perfect color match (I bought 203 Nude Beige) and blended out fast and evenly. I have foundations from Chanel to MAC, Prescriptives to Clinique, and I love finding a drugstore makeup that works too. At 1.3 ounce tube, it travels well and is great to throw into a workout bag or purse for touch ups.
What it is: Four smart, classy sheer nudes that flatter and work with every conceivable outfit you own. Free of camphor, phthalates, formaldehyde or toluene. ($6)
Why we liked it: (from left to right) Alabaster Nail lacquer is the lightest with a bit of pearl shimmer. Peaches and Cream Nail lacquer is a wash of peachy pink with a hint of opalescent shimmer. Almond Nail lacquer is classic, neutral and most opaque nude of the group. Mocha has a hint of platinum shimmer to catch light for a sexy take on neutral.
