ABC anchor Elizabeth Vargas is back in rehab.
The news anchor is checked back into rehab for alcohol addiction for a third time according to The New York Daily News, CNN and ABC News.
The ’20/20′ anchor checked into a rehab center on Saturday while on vacation in California. Vargas, 51, has tried to manage her alcohol addiction for years. She spent several weeks in rehab last fall and is in the midst of a divorce.
“While on vacation this weekend, I decided to return to a recovery center. As so many other recovering alcoholics know, overcoming the disease can be a long and incredibly difficult process,” Vargas, 51, said in a statement to The News Sunday.
“I feel I have let myself, my co-workers and most importantly my family down and for that I am ashamed and sorry. I am committed to battling and addressing this debilitating disease and want to thank everyone who has offered their unwavering support during this trying time.”
Vargas’s public divorce with songwriter Marc Cohen, who reportedly cheated on her with Ruth Zuckerman while she sought treatment in rehab last November was made public by the Daily News and other media. They have two young sons.
In a statement, an ABC News spokeswoman said, ‘Our thoughts are with Elizabeth and her family and we look forward to having her back at ABC News when she feels ready to return.’
Shortly after returning from her last stint in rehab, Vargas talked extensively about her struggle in a wide-ranging interview with “Good Morning America” co-host George Stephanopoulos.
“I am an alcoholic,” she said. “It took me a long time to admit that to myself. It took me a long time to admit it to my family, but I am. The amount of energy I expended keeping that secret and keeping this problem hidden from view was exhausting.”
