DVD Review: Hannah Montana - One in a Million

Hannah Montana continues to ride a wave of popularity so that necessitates another complication of episodes of the show for her rabid fanbase to consume.  I’m just jealous because I don’t get a piece of the action.

Hannah Montana is a rock star with a secret identity, Miley Stewart (Miley Cyrus).  She adopted it so that she could keep her private life private and attend school like a normal kid.  So she dons the blonde wig, ala those specs that differentiate Clark Kent from Superman, and appears on stage in her rock star personality.

Her dad Robbie Ray (real life dad Billy Ray Cyrus) also dons a fake mustache to do double duty as dad and manager.  Her brother Jackson (Jason Earles) is always getting into trouble, not that Hannah/Miley isn’t always getting into the same and usually with her best friend Lilly (Emily Osment).

Lilly’s Mom has Got It Going On: Robbie Ray goes on a date with Lilly’s mom (Heather Locklear) and the girls dream that they’ll end up sisters – until things don’t go well on the date.

Me and Mr. Jonas and Mr. Jonas and Mr. Jonas: Hannah and Robbie Ray go into the studio and happen upon the Jonas Brothers.  Hannah is elated until the Brothers want Robbie to write a song for them and she gets jealous.

I Will Always Loathe You: Hannah is going to get an award and her Grandma (Vicki Lawrence) and Aunt Dolly (Dolly Parton) is there for the festivities.  However, problems arise when the two are more into bickering with each other than basking in the glory of Hannah’s award.

That’s What Friends are For?: Jake Ryan (Cody Linley) returns but he just wants to be friends.  However, Hannah finds out that he has to kiss her archrival Mikayla (Selena Gomez) in the new movie that Jake is shooting.  Miley then has to get past Mikayla’s manager Margo (Camryn Manheim) to make sure that lips don’t lock.

Hannah Montana One in a Million is presented in fullscreen as the episodes were aired on television.  Special features include music videos for “One in a Million” (4 minutes) and “True Friend” (3 minutes).  Next is the 11 minute “Come Feud with Me: The Top Ten Disney Channel Character Feuds” hosted by Jason Earles and just serves to highlight shows from the Disney Channel.  Finally there’s the 22-minute That So Raven bonus episode “Run Raven Run.”

Hannah Montana is a bit too over the top for me, but my daughter was enthralled so it’s a hit with the target audience.  Season sets probably would’ve been a better choice, but Disney keeps bringing them out in these themed sets.

There were some laughs for this elderly reviewer, but it’s more of a hit with the tween crowd.  I still think the acting is over the top but that’s just par for the course with the shows that make up the current roster of shows on the Disney Channel.

Hannah Montana - One in a Million is now available at Amazon. As of yet, there is not a release date for the UK. Visit the DVD database for more information.
