DVD Review: That '70s Show - Season 7

The next to last season of the popular comedy show now finds it way onto DVD.  This season has some laughs but also seems to lose some of that, as the residents have to think about their futures.  

The gang is still grooving after all these years, but it’s time for the residents of Point Place to do some semi-serious thinking about their future.  This season, Eric (Topher Grace) and Donna (Laura Prepon) pick up the pieces of their broke engagement and decide to just hang out and have fun. 

Eric decides to take off a year while Donna goes blonde in a change of pace.  Hyde (Danny Masterson) gets to know his funky father (Tim Reid) and foxy half-sister (Megalyn Echikunwoke).  Jackie (Mila Kunis) gets her own public access TV show, while Kelson (Ashton Kutcher) stuggles to treat women with more respect after the birth of his daughter.  And Fez (Wilmer Valderrama) finds his true calling as the shampoo boy at a beauty salon.  Red (Kurtwood Smith) buys a muffler shop with Eric’s college money and Kitty (Debra Jo Rupp) didn’t do enough to stop him. 

This has Eric taking matters into his own hands and the season closer finds him taking drastic measures to fund his college education. This season finds some funny antics but it really doesn’t compare to the hilarity that was in other seasons, but scores better than the final season where Grace and Kutcher only made guest appearances.  All twenty-five episodes of season seven are spread out across four discs.  

That ‘70s Show is presented in fullscreen as they were originally aired on television.  Special features include promo spots for all episodes.  Director David Trainer offers commentary on “Time is on My Side” (Disc one), “Angie” (Disc two), and “Till the Next Goodbye” (Disc four). 

Disc four also has the 7 minute “A ‘70s Show Flashback: Don Stark” in which the actor that played Bob Pinciotti, Donna’s father, talks about his time on the show.  The 8 minute “Behind the Polyester: Writing That ‘70s Show” talks with executive producers Rob Des Hotel, Mark Hudis, and Dean Batali. 

The 12-minute “That Seventh ‘70s Show” is a quick rundown of what happens in this season.  

This season is a bit better than the final one but still seems like the steam has been taken a bit out of the show.  However, there are still some funny episodes.  Fans of the show will find something to like, but this season does seem to lack the punch of others. 

The set does have a small selection of special features but they also seem to be lacking what was in other seasons. This season does feature the full cast unlike the last season, which should be on DVD soon.
