The aliens have landed and brought along a ton of zany laughs thanks to Anchor Bay Entertainment’s four-disc release of the first season of 3rd Rock From the Sun.
The show, which premiered in 1996 and earned 31 Emmy nominations during its run, stared John Lithgow, Jane Curtin, Kristen Johnson, French Stewart, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
With a plot as outrageous as the characters the actors played, 3rd Rock follows a group of aliens, lead by an overacting but hilarious Lithgow, which disguise themselves as earthlings and try to learn our traditions and customs.
Each of the aliens assume a role in human society, and quickly prove just how strange life seems from the outside. Lithgow, who is quick to remind the others he is the high commander, takes on the role of Dr. Dick Solomon - a professor of physics at the University of Ohio.
This job position forces him to share an office with the great Curtin – which provides a ton of laughs as the two actors play off each other. It also helps add tension to the show as Lithgow struggles to appear "normal" around his co-workers.
Although Lithgow is the center of the show and often provides the most laughs through his bizarre behavior, each actor is given enough screen time to develop their characters and each stand out from the other members of the cast.
Lithgow and Curtin were great on screen together
The Season One set contains 20 episodes along with a ton of special features that any fan of the show will love. It is also the perfect set for anyone who has never caught the show in syndication or during its original run.
The four-disc set includes episodes like “Post-Nasal Dick” - where the group all catch colds for the first time and believe that they are all going to die; “Lonely Dick” - where Sally (the lieutenant trapped in a woman’s body) researches women and their confusing beauty secrets; and “The Art of Dick” - where Dick and Harry (the not so smart alien played by Stewart) attend art classes which cause Lithgow to become jealous of Harry’s talent.
The DVD set also comes loaded with bonus features that any fan of the show will love. The features includes a blooper reel, a behind the scenes look at the making of the show, interviews with cast members, highlights from the first season, and a 16 page collectable booklet with facts about the show and other information.
The cast of aliens were sure to deliver laughs each episode
3rd Rock From the Sun was a great and funny show because it never tried to take itself serious. The actors never seemed above doing whatever was required for the laugh, and there was never a shortage of humor on the show. The season one box set is a perfect collection for any fan of show and I highly recommend it.
