Even though the movie is predictable, Hitch is an enjoyable film thanks to the amount of laughs provided by Will Smith and Kevin James, and its romantic charm.
Hitch is a light-hearted comedy about Smith’s character Alex "Hitch" Hitchens’ life as a “date doctor” whose world is turned upside down when he finds himself falling in love with a gossip columnist, played by Eva Mendes.
Although he knows all the rights and wrongs of dating, he can’t help but stumble into the same mistakes that plague his clients.
Along the way, Hitch tries to help goofball Albert, played by James, win the woman of his dreams – who just happens to be a rich heiress that is way out of his league. The two men pursue their loves at the same time, and the film shows the roadblocks both face and the trouble they cause for each other.
Smith does an excellent job playing the character Hitch – a role that suits the actor’s charm and grace that has been a standard part of his persona in film. Hitch is smooth, always knows what to say, and never wrong.
At the same time, Hitch’s cool is shattered when he finds himself falling for what may be the love of his life. All his smooth moves seem to blow up in his face, and Smith seems to enjoy laughing at all the style that is associated with the character.
No matter how hard he tries, Hitch can’t seem to make the date go perfect and is constantly screwing up in ways even his clients couldn’t manage. These situations, such as an allergic reaction to shellfish, make for some really funny moments in the film.
Smith and James keep you laughing from start to finish
They also help the character’s never give up attitude come off as charming rather than annoying. Also Smith does a good job playing the straight man to James’ bumbling Albert, and helps James from seeming like a total idiot.
Although Smith is the star of the movie, James manages to steal the laughs in every single scene involving the actor. His “everyman” character is in full force in the movie, and you just can’t help but root for him.
James uses of slapstick comedy and facial expression provide some of the biggest laughs in the film. I honestly don’t think the film could have been as funny without the actor.<!--page-->
Hitch Main Menu
The two actors do a really great job playing off each other and making the film really entertaining. James’ bumbling and lack of style is a perfect mirror for Smith’s cool. You can’t help but laugh out load when Smith tries to teach James how to dance, or, even worse, how to make that first kiss a success. Although it is entertaining, the film is extremely predictable and does little in terms of originality in the romantic comedy genre. While this doesn’t ruin the film, it does keep you from worrying about the two characters too much when things go south in their relationships.
Since we know the movie is following every rule of the genre, we are expecting a problem and know all will work right in the end. The film’s ending follows those rules, but still gives some laughs thanks again to Smith and James.
The DVD comes with several special features including deleted scene and a gag reel, behind the scenes featurettes, and 'I Thing' Music Video by Amerie.
Hitch Special Features
The deleted scenes provide some more funny moments to the film, as does the gag reel, but doesn’t offer much more. The behind the scenes are interesting, but have become a fairly standard part of most DVD special features.
Even though we have seen it done a dozen times over, Hitch is a romantic comedy that manages to stay funny from start to finish. Smith and James work great together and keep the movie from just being standard. I would recommend the movie to any fans of the two actors or anyone just wanting a simple funny movie.
Hitch is now available at Amazon and can be pre-ordered at AmazonUK for a July 4 release. Visit the film's database for more information.
