DVD Review: Seed of Chucky

The movie picks up where Bride left off with Chucky and his love Tiffany deciding they want kids after the arrival of a third puppet “Glen or Glenda” who claims to be their offspring. The trio, a sort of not-so-nice version of the Brady Bunch, decides to kidnap Jennifer Tilly and the rapper Redman to swap souls and start a new life together. Chucky’s world is turned upside down when Tiffany declares their bloodlust is an addiction and they were going to go “cold turkey” and stop killing people. Chucky tries for about two minutes and then decides that killing is what makes him feel good and not something that he should stop. He is unaware that Tiffany also is having trouble controlling her killing urge, but justifies it as simple slips. There isn’t much more plot to the movie, but if you have seen any of the Child’s Play series you can’t expect much more. Jennifer Tilly, who also provides the voice for Tiffany, hams up the role of herself and seems to enjoy making fun of the Hollywood lifestyle and expectations of movie stars.Tilly provides a lot of the laughs in the movie and doesn’t seem to mind making her own lifestyle, such as her eating habits and weight, part of the movie’s punch line.Further laughs are provided by John Waters, the director who is famous for his own unique style of comedy, who plays a paparazzi photographer. Waters isn’t in too much of the movie, but adds some really funny moments – such as when he snaps photos of Chucky preparing a sample so Tiffany can get Tilly pregnant. While it is disturbing, you can’t help but laugh.Seed of Chucky also maintains the blood and gore requirement to live up to past Chucky movies. Several scenes, such as Waters having acid poured over his head, are over the top, but fit in with this bizarre world of killer dolls.

While the movie won’t win any Oscars, it is entertaining in its own bizarre way and lives up to the tone and style that brought Chucky back to the big screen in 1998. Although the plot is a little weaker and the third puppet is annoying, Chucky continues to deliver the one-liners and bad attitude that made him a star in the horror genre.

Bride of Chucky was more entertaining, but Seed of Chucky is worth watching if you are a fan of the series. It really doesn’t offer much in terms of horror, but then a psychotic doll isn’t that scary in the first place.The movie comes with several special features including Family Hell-iday Slideshow - The Chucky family hosts the first viewing of their exploits through Paris, New York and Hollywood, Audio Commentary with Writer-Director Don Mancini and Jennifer Tilly, and Conceiving the Seed of Chucky - A behind-the-scenes look at two decades of Chucky films.There are also clips from Jennifer Tilly’s appearance on The Tonight Show and a look at her video diary of the appearance. The disc also has the special FuZion Up Close with the Seed of Chucky Stars from the mun2 television behind-the-scenes look and interviews with Chucky and Tiffany.The special features are worth watching for any fan of the Chucky series or anyone who really enjoyed the movie. If you aren’t a fan of the series, they are a bit of overkill and won’t offer much more to the enjoyment of the movie.

Seed of Chucky is a dark comedy that offers a twisted look at family and the Hollywood lifestyle. It is a movie that you have to accept at face value and not look for much depth. The movie has some laughs and is worth watching as long as you know what you are going to be getting. Seed of Chucky is available at Amazon.
