DVD Review: The Simple Life 2: Road Trip

By Andy McKeague May 15, 2005, 17:20 GMT

Have you ever done something that you knew was wrong but just not help yourself ? Like watching a 'Big Brother' episode or a Brittany Spears video for instance; you know it’s cheesy, it’s all fake, yet no matter how much you want to switch over you can’t.

Welcome to 'The Simple Life 2 Road Trip'. Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie are reunited from the first series and foul mouth their way from Miami to L.A. accompanied by their pampered canines and as little clothing as possible. This latest edition of their ‘un-reality’ show has them devoid of cash, mobile phones, credit cards, and begging and stealing their way across the 3,000-mile journey from family to family from job to job.

In between bouts of “That’s Hot” and “Do you Love it ?” the pair travel to a family, work for a day or two to earn their cash and then continue on. All 10 of the 20 minute episodes follow a similar line; they have no cash, they make their way to the family of the day, get acquainted, go to their new job, muck it up in a couldn’t care less bad rich girl way, and then move on to the next episode.

From helping out at a rodeo ranch to posing as state officers to distacting the opposing baseball team to being housemaids at a nudist camp. None of these are talked with any seriousness from the pair and you have the feeling that a proper days work would kill them, or their boss would. Paris falls off her horse at the ranch and almost before she hits the deck a helicopter lands and whisks her away to the casualty ward. So much for a reality show. The music tries to make a bigger dramatic impact for most of these trivial moments.

There are two ways to take this. Paris and Nicole can be pretty funny some of the time in their brattish sort of way, and the fish out of water type of thing as they go across Middle America does have its comedic moments. The other way is to see this as a condescending mockery of those less fortunate than the two on show. The whole thing depends on your point of view here.

Like most reality, unreality or mock-mentary shows, this is addictive, although it might be for the wrong reasons and you might want to have a shower afterwards. It is well produced and the first series became very popular. Look on the bright side; at 20 minutes an episode it can be viewed as a guilty pleasure, but should it ?

The extras are basically a 30 minutes worth of outtakes and deleted scenes, containing those of the car washing in the title sequence. Oh and beware, series 3 ‘Interns’, is on its way.

'The Simple Life 2: Road Trip' is out to own now and available via Amazon UK in the UK and available for pre-order in the US via Amazon.
