DVD Review: The Chronicles of Riddick Unrated Director’s Cut

“After years of outrunning the bounty hunters, escaped convict Riddick suddenly finds himself caught between opposing forces in a fight for the future of the human race.”

Vin Diesel is excellent reprising his role of Riddick and this time director Twohy cranks up the action for an interplanetary war. What is revealed here in the Director’s Cut is more of the mythology behind the character that was only glanced upon in the cinemas but strangely shown in the cinema trailer….. nodding it’s head more than a few times as a ‘Conan the Barbarian’ in space. A few of the action scenes have been extended to bring this more into focus too showing Riddick not just as a killing machine as he was portrayed in Pitch Black but as a ‘last’ survivor of a dwindling race of Furyan warriors that has been prophesied to bring the doom and destruction to the Necromongers who are on a galaxy domination tour. There’s more jarring violence too and at times the style of editing can leave you grabbing your chair to steady yourself.

'The Chronicles of Riddick – Unrated Director’s Cut' has loads of extras and it’s nice to see a few personal touches too from the cast and crew…. As soon as you place in the disc and have waded through the trailers (which can be skipped if preferred) you have some great menu animation and then the choice of ‘Convert’ or ‘Fight’ is yours….. Depending on your pick you get a different menu outlay but there’s a little surprise if you pick ‘Fight’ as you will get an extra Director’s introduction to the flick beforehand. A nice little touch for merchandising too, in one of the expanded scenes it introduces the character of Shriah (absent from the theatrical release) which ties this nicely with her character in The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay game.Strangely there is a subtle change to the end of the movie too, but you will need to watch it to find out!

Sit down and enjoy, there are not many better popcorn movies around that are so entertaining and fun as this polished pulp sci-fi action yarn.Full details on the extras over in the database.
