To me, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is possibly the best action movie ever or was it because I saw it two days after Chipwrecked? What could be more thrilling then watching somebody throw a spear at an electric eel to power up a 200 year old submarine that came right out of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea?
The movie starts with policeman chasing a teenager on a motorcycle, then the teenager crashes and it comes time for a cliché father confrontation.
That was not the best opening, but I forgot about it when Sean (Josh Hutcherson) and his step-father Hank (Dwayne Johnson also known as The Rock!) ended their stupid argument about motorcycles and started trying to crack a code as if they thought they were in National Treasure 3!
After ripping the map page out of three books (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Gulliver’s Travels, and Treasure Island), they make one big map and discover that the books were all about the same island.
Using their map and dad’s credit card, Sean and Hank set off on a quest to find the island. They hire Gabato (Luis Guzman) and his daughter Kailani (Vanessa Hudgens) to fly them to where the island is located. After flying into a tornado, they awake on the beach of the island and set off in search of Sean's grandfather - who they hope can get them back home.
After 20 minutes of uniting with Sean’s crazy grandpa Alexander (Michael Caine), they discover that the island is also Atlantis and will sink in 48 hours. Their only hope for escape is finding Captain Nemo’s famous submarine The Nautilus and using it as a way off the island.
To get to the submarine, they will have to cross the mysterious island that is filled with danger and awesome CGI that looks great on Blu-ray! When they are flying on giant bees, every fuzzy little hair is rendered. When they are running away from the giant lizard, its detail would make even Godzilla cry.
The only problem I had with the show’s visuals was that the bugs were a little… to realistic… but I guess some people would enjoy that.
Besides it great special effects, it’s also got pure thrills. About halfway through the movie, everything falls apart. The island is sinking, the submarine’s batteries failed to last for 200 years, and a volcano is erupting GOLD!
Of course it also had some stupid parts, Sean’s step-father tries to teach him how to impress girls (something called the pec-pop of love that I don’t think anyone but The Rock could really do), but he does not listen. Instead, Sean does what every single movie teen boy and girl has to do - a very long lasting… kiss.
The movie could have gone without the whole “romance” factor and focused more on the “father and son” angle, but the action is just below movies like The Avengers.
On Blu-ray, the movie is a lot of fun and has a lot of bonus material if you are into that sort of thing. It comes with a funny gag reel, deleted scenes, and an interactive adventure that features Josh Hutcherson.
Overall, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is a good movie, but not quite as good as Journey to the Center of the Earth.
It seems like they tried to take the best parts out of good movies (National Treasure, 20000 Leagues Under the Sea, etc.), and then used the concept of the bad movies (Chipwrecked, Gulliver’s Travels, etc.). It had some minor mistakes, but those are forgettable. I’d give it 4 stars and I can’t wait to see Journey 3.
