Idris Elba returns as Detective Chief Inspector John Luther in a riveting second series.  Four hour long episodes bring Luther and his team into unimaginable dangers threatening both the physical and psychological wellbeing.

John Luther returns to his department after his wife’s death ready to move ahead with his work.  The department has been re-organized under the governance of Detective Superintendant Martin Schenk (Dermot Crowley) and has been re-named the Serious and Serial Crime Unit.

First order of business Luther re-instates Sergeant Justin Ripley (Warren Brown) because he has remained loyal to Luther through all the flap concerning his wife’s death.  A new person in the department Erin Gray (Nikki Amuka-Bird) is wary of Luther’s reputation as going outside the law to get things accomplished.

In spite of this cautiousness, Detective Gray fits in with the rest, and has valuable talents.

Luther 2 DVD has four episodes presented on two discs and is an intriguing and satisfying police drama.  In spite of the brutality of the criminals which is just one thing that drives Luther in his quest for justice, the show has a sense of neat police work.

The story is as much about the characters as it is about the crimes, and the individuality of both good and bad is deftly explored.  Idris Elba is superb as Luther, creating a character that is believable, intelligent, caring and above all fascinating to observe.  Let us hope that there will be a Luther 3!
