By June L. Nov 2, 2010, 16:32 GMT

Melinda Gordon (Jennifer Love Hewitt) has a gift - she can communicate with earthbound spirits or ghosts who cling to the living because they have unfinished business in our world preventing them from "crossing over" or going into the light. Inspired in part by the work of famed medium James Van Praagh and of Mary Ann Winkowski, a real-life communicator with earth bound spirits, GHOST WHISPERER explores the spiritual side ...more
Watching the final season of Ghost Whisperer again in this DVD set simply solidified my thought that the series ended too soon. Always entertaining, well crafted and interesting, Ghost Whisperer was achieving a new level of storytelling, and then it was gone. Fans will want to add this final DVD to their collections.
Ghost Whisperer was an ever changing and growing entity of a show that had something for everyone. The talented and beauteous Jennifer Love Hewitt was sympathetic and convincing as Melinda Gordon, a woman who could see spirits and even better could help them cross over into the light.
Surrounded by wonderful actors and actresses such as Camryn Manheim, David Conrad, Jamie Kennedy and guest stars that gave fine performances, Ghost Whisperer was a do not miss weekly series. After a fourth season that rocked the foundations of Melinda’s emotional life, the show’s powers that be made a bold decision to move the action five years into the future.
This gave the stories freshness and a complexity that would not have been available otherwise, and provided viewers with much to discuss from episode to episode. The initial feeling of “oh no, it is going to be a dream” gave way to total belief in the storyline and curiosity as to the scope of powers of Melinda’s five year old son Aiden. The show brought in elements from past seasons and wove them into a satisfying conflict between good and evil.
The finale was excellent, resolving some of the issues, but leaving enough open that fans can imagine future adventures. It is a show that we were sorry to lose from weekly television.
Ghost Whisperer The Final Season DVD is presented on six discs, containing all episodes and a nice selection of specials. “A Season of Changes” featurette contains interviews with directors, writers, producers and cast members concerning the decision to move the story five years into the future.
“A Triple Threat” is an in-depth look at the work of Jennifer Love Hewitt as star, executive producer and director of the series. This season has the 100th episode of the series, and a special feature is included “Celebrating 100” in which cast, crew, production team show viewers the behind the scenes action as they are filming the episode.
This has a bittersweet feel, as at the time everyone was in high hopes of a long future for the show. “The Other Side IV” is a series of web episodes, featuring the story of a haunted family whose new house contains a spirit that has latched on to their young daughter.
“Ghosts of Rockland Memorial” is a game viewers can play, trying to locate all the spirits from Season Five that were attached to Rockland Memorial Hospital. Ghost Town allows viewers to help cross over ghosts that are stuck in the world of the living.
Ghost Whisperer is the type of series most mystery/supernatural fans will want to own and re-visit.
