Bones is one of our favorite shows on television and to collect to watch repeatedly. This Season Five set is full of great stories, well defined characters, clever dialog and some of the best series moments yet. Fans should be delighted with the collection.
If you are a long-time fan of Bones, you will most likely agree that the fifth season is the best so far. Each year is good, getting better and better as cast melds into the wonderful team.
Dr. Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) is brilliant and is developing a sense of humor, but still doesn’t have the “human feelings” part of her life together. FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) is a tough guy with a tender heart that he has completely lost to the clueless Brennan.
The Jeffersonian Institute forensic department is headed by Dr. Camille Saroyan (Tamar Taylor) who has developed canny ways to manage her very individualistic co-workers from Dr. Brennan, entomologist Dr. Jack Hodgins (T. J. Thyne), forensic artist Angela Montenegro (Michaela Conlin) and psychologist Dr. Lance Sweets (John Frances Daley to the cast of “revolving” interns each with their own quirk.
Their backstories give some great moments to this year’s episodes, Daisy (Carla Gallo) and Sweets have relationship issues, Dr. Clark Edison (Eugene Byrd) is still not amused by the “unscientific” personal information shared in the lab, Vincent Nigel-Murray (Ryan Cartright) is still trying to prove himself, Wendell Bray (Michael Grant Terry) gets close to Angela, Arastoo Vaziri (Pej Vahdat) embraces his true persona, and Colin Fisher (Joel Moore) tries to embrace the lighter side of life.
The episode “The Gamer in the Grease” features the film Avatar in which Moore has a major role.
Add to the wonderful cast a set of recurring characters such as Billy Gibbons as Angela’s father, Brendan Fehr as Booth’s brother Jared, Deidre Lovejoy as the chilling criminal Gravedigger, Ryan O’Neal as Dr. Brennan’s father and Stephen Fry as Dr. Gordon Wyatt (who has some key moments with Sweets discussing the Bones/Booth relationship), the show feels like a visit with friends.
It is always a joy to watch episodes with Patricia Belcher as prosecutor Caroline Julian. Also great guest appearances by Zoey Deschanel as a distant relative of Dr. Brennan’s, Ralph Waites as Hank Booth’s grandfather, Cyndi Lauper as Angela’s psychic Avalon Harmonia, and Tiffany Hines taking over the role of Michelle Welton, Cam’s adopted daughter add zip and sparkle to the series that is already so much fun.
The 100th Episode is a flashback to Bones and Booth’s first case together, and not only do we get to see the germination of their odd relationship, but we get a chance to watch Eric Milligan as Zack Addy. This episode was directed by David Boreanaz.
Bones The Complete Fifth Season “Beyond the Grave Edition” is presented on six discs in a plastic keeper box illustrated with stills, and listing of the episodes and special features.
The specials are good, including deleted scenes and a gag reel, commentaries for selected episodes, extended versions of selected episodes and the 100th Episode with director David Boreanaz. There are two featurettes, The Bodies of Bones which looks in detail at the depiction of the victims, and The Nunchuck Way which you will just have to see.
All in all, an excellent collection of episodes and specials of a fine show.
