Television at its best has come to DVD. FlashForward is the hit new television show that might borrow Lost’s formula, but quickly hooks you thanks to its great cast and brilliant story.
The first ten episodes deal with a great ensemble cast and what the flashing forward might or might not mean to their characters. All the while when watching is the underlying question: What if this were to REALLY happen? And then the other questions start: What would I flash forward?
The premise is that for 2 minutes and 17 seconds, the whole world blacked out. Some died, because if you were swimming at that time, or you were driving a car or if you were perched on a tightrope walking across…you died.
But the ones who merely fell to the floor or they were sleeping in bed or some other non-threatening activity, they lived. And they saw into the future for 2 minutes and 17 seconds. What does each character’s flash forward mean? Well, that is what the show is about.
And there are many, many other questions that surface. Can you change the future? Are we locked into a destiny or is it in our power to change what will happen? Does what will happen become what MIGHT happen?
The show follows an extensive ensemble cast as they deal with these questions and the perplexing conundrum of their flash forwards.
Joseph Fiennes plays Agent Mark Benford who survived the flash forward by crawling out of his wrecked car. As with other characters, he has issues of dealing with faith and his power to overcome his own weaknesses (namely the fact he is an alcoholic). The questions of why and how surround who he is and who he becomes.
Other characters in this huge cast include Demetri Noh, played by John Cho, Lloyd Simcoe, played by Jack Davenport, Dr. Bryce Varley, played by Zachary Knighton, Nicole Kirby, played by Peyton List, and Aaron Stark, played by Brian O’Byrne, to name a few. All have to deal with their flash forward and what they might mean.
The set includes only the first 10 episodes, but that doesn’t make it less enjoyable. It will also leave you waiting for and wanting more.
Special features include a Creating the Catastrophe: The Effects of a Global Blackout, which shows how CGI was used to make the disaster look really real, and FlashFoward: A Look Ahead, which is a teaser that gives hints as to where the show might go and what direction it will take.
FlashFoward is creative genius, and the set ends right when it is getting really good. If you didn’t catch the show when it aired, then you are in for a treat. If you did catch it, then you are a fan (who could not be after watching???) and will want this set for your collection. As a fan, I can’t wait for more.
