One of the best superhero team-ups on television makes its way onto DVD in one complete set. This set contains a collection of the first two seasons of Justice League and the two seasons of Justice League Unlimited.
In this action-packed adventure series, the world's greatest superheroes, including Superman (George Newbern), Batman (Kevin Conroy), Wonder Woman (Susan Eisenberg), Green Lantern (Phil LaMarr), The Flash (Michael Rosenbaum), Hawkgirl (Maria Canals) and Martian Manhunter (Carl Lumbly), join forces as the Justice League to battle powerful villains, supernatural creatures and evil entities determined to take over the world and destroy the League. Their adventures would air from 2001 till 2004 under the title of Justice League.
From 2004 till 2006 the series would become Justice League Unlimited with the seven “founding members” taking more of a backseat and more DC characters joining the series. The show would also feature various DC comics’ villainy such as the Joker (Mark Hamill) and Lex Luthor (Clancy Brown).
Bruce Timm, fresh off the success of Batman: The Animated Series, tried his hand at a multiple superhero franchise and came up roses. The series has been out on DVD before and this new release only adds one new addition.
Justice League was a series of story arcs spanning three or so episodes each. Warner Brothers revamped the series into Justice League Unlimited which dealt more with stand alone adventures.
Justice League is presented in fullscreen for the first season of Justice League, Season Two is 1.78:1, but not enhanced for 16x9 televisions, and Justice League Unlimited is presented in anamorphic widescreen (1.78:1) that is enhanced for 16x9 televisions. Special features include Bruce Timm helmed commentaries on Justice League episodes “The Enemy Below (part 2),” “Legends (part 2),” “The Savage Time (part 2),” “Twilight (part 2),” “A Better World (part 2),” and “Starcrossed (part 3).” Justice League Unlimited has commentaries for “This Little Piggy” and “The Return.”
The series finale “Destroyer” has a music only track. Justice League (aka Volume One) also contains seven featurettes and Justice League Unlimited (aka Volume Two) contains four featurettes. The only new addition is on disc fifteen and is the 16 minute “Unlimited Reserve: Exploring the Depths of the DC Universe.”
The whole shebang is housed in a nice metal slipcase with the founding members of the League on the front and back.
Justice League fans may have been excited at the announcement, but the reality is that this set is only a repackage of what has come before. Any hopes of remastered aspect ratios are dashed as the set features the exact same discs that have already been released before.
If you’re a fan of the show I’d bet that you already have these in your collection. I have to admit that the metal slipcase looks good, but what the thing contains is pretty disappointing. If you’re a fan that hasn’t bought a season of the show before though this does offer you the ability to get the whole series in that lovely case.
