In a show that continues to delight and surprise, the fifth season of Medium is another winning chapter in the chronicles of Allison DuBois a psychic who is also a devoted wife and mother and public servant working for the DA’s office.
In this season, there are challenges that no one expected, and the DuBois family is stressed to the max in both home life and working conditions.
Patricia Arquette is completely convincing in the character of Allison DuBois. She makes audiences feel what it must be like to have the uncanny ability to know things, especially things about murders and crimes. Never selfish or manipulating, Allison uses her powers for the good of those around her, at the price of having to bear the burden of what she knows and sees.
Sofia Vasillieva who plays the oldest DuBois daughter Ariel gives stunning performances as a teen trying to adjust and accept the “gift” inherited from her mother. Miss Vasillieva as well as the other young stars Maria Lark (who plays Bridgette) and Madison and Miranda Carabello (twins who alternately play Marie the youngest DuBois child) are all to be congratulated for their abilities in portraying believable children in tough situations.
The family life in Medium has a ring of truth that is appealing to audiences, and makes a fine setting for the less than normal abilities of Allison and her daughters. Joe DuBois (Jake Webber) as husband and father to these ladies has a tough role. In spite of the psychic disturbances he maintains stability in their lives, and puts the family unit together.
Whoever writes the engineer career scenes for Joe is spot on, and this veracity of situation makes the whole series even better and more fun to watch.
Season Five of Medium is presented on 5 discs containing all eighteen episodes. Discs are housed in keeper cases illustrated with stills from the episodes and with program notes and synopses from the episodes. Running time for the episodes is 13 hours and 30 minutes.
Special features included with the set for Season Five include a featurette “The Making of Medium” Season Five, which examines the production and performances as well as story lines. “Script to Screen: Apocalypse…Now?” looks at the episode in which Allison dreams of a nuclear holocaust and attempts to decipher what she is being told.
This special shows the episode from first draft and read through to finished production. Next is a question and answer session with stars Jake Webber and Patricia Arquette. Finally there is a segment called “Curious Maria” in which star Maria Lark interviews cast, crew and production staff about their roles on the show and their thoughts about characters or actions.
It is a fun piece, and shows again the skills of this talented young actress. In a show that consistently blends horror with laughter, normal with paranormal and keeps it all fresh and entertaining, Medium The Complete Fifth Season belongs in the collections of fan and those who enjoy well written, finely acted dramas.
