Fourteen discs, thirty-eight hours, five seasons, and one giggling yellow buck toothed sponge in pants. America’s favorite Sponge celebrates his first hundred episodes with this square shaped set of the popular show. So grab yourself a crabby patty and turn on the television, try not to drown, and enjoy the adventures of SpongeBob.
In the style of Jacques Cousteau: travel below the harsh seas to a simpler place. It’s called Bikini Bottom and is filled with a variety of sea life that gets along in their daily routines much like we land dwellers do.
At the center of this teeming metropolis is main character SpongeBob Squarepants (Tom Kenny), living in a pineapple under the sea. He’s employed at the Krusty Krab restaurant as a fry cook and lorded over by his greedy boss Eugene Krabs (Clancy Brown). His glum, cranky neighbor Squidward (Rodger Bumpass) is also employed at the eatery. SpongeBob’s best friend and compatriot is dimwitted starfish Patrick Starr (Bill Fagerbakke).
The only land based pal that lives in the town is SpongeBob’s pal Texas squirrel Sandy Cheeks (Carolyn Lawrence) and she lives in an underwater dome and wears a diving suit to keep her from drowning in this watery environment.
SpongeBob Squarepants has been around for going on eight seasons and being under the sea has never been funnier. The character can be both annoying and amusing at the same time and his adventures with his dimwitted pal Patrick will certainly bring a smile to your face no matter what your age.
The show is firmly aimed at the kids, but it’s one that the parental units can also find something to giggle at as well. SpongeBob has become a cultural phenomenon on the level of Mickey Mouse and is seen all around the globe and under the sea. The series made it to its one hundredth episode in season five and this brand new box set celebrates the accomplishment.
I suppose that they could’ve called it the series so far and put all of the available seasons, but for SpongeFans this set will be the catfish’s meow. It comes housed in a hefty Plexiglas square (like the hero) container that reminded me of a fish tank and has seven slimcases that feature groovy box art of our main characters. It’s a hefty set that feels worth every dollar when weighed in your claw… um hand.
Much of the first sea-sons [insert SpongeBob giggle here] were released in themed sets with only the last several being released in complete season sets. If you’ve not snatched those sets up then this gives you an easy way to collect the first five seasons of the show in one place.
What will please current fans is the inclusion of some nice special features.
Special features include commentaries on Spy Buddies, New Digs, Roller Cowards, Bucket Sweet Bucket, To Love a Patty, Money Talks, SpongeBob vs. the Patty Gadget, Goo Goo Gas, The Inmates of Summer, Two Faces of Squidward, and Banned in Bikini Bottom.
Disc fourteen features the 42 minute “Square Roots: The Story of SpongeBob Squarepants” (though strangely you get a warning for adult language), the 8 minute “Life Lessons from Bikini Bottom” is made to mimic those old instructional films and features show characters, the 9 minute “Help Wanted: Seven Seas Edition” features an episode dubbed with the various languages the show appears in around the globe, and the 1 minute “Kick-Wham-Pow-Bob” music video.
SpongeBob Squarepants: The First 100 Episodes is a heavy square full of fun. It’s just a fun show that has become a cultural phenomenon. If you’ve not been snapping up any SpongeBob sets, this hefty box set offers you an easy way to grab up the first five seasons.
SpongeBob Squarepants: The First 100 Episodes is now available at Amazon . Visit the DVD database for more information.
