The Unit: Season 4 comes to DVD for its final installment, and fans will be thoroughly immersed in the lives of the Blanes, Browns, Gerhardts, and Charlie Grey as they fight in missions abroad and on the home front. The wives and their children are threatened by terrorist attacks on America soil by poison gas and nuclear war heads.
The men of The Unit are Jonas Blane (Dennis Haybert), Bob Brown (Scott Foley), Mack Gerhardt (Max Martini), Charles Grey (Michael Irby). They are aided by two new members, a strong woman character Bridget Sullivan (Nicole Steinwedell) and Sam McBride (Wes Chatham).
There is a unique plot twist with McBride as The Unit decides whether or not to trust him as one of their own. We also see how ruthless Brigadier General Thomas Ryan (Robert Patrick) is in seeing the missions complete and successful.
In this season, the wives take a strong role as they help in various missions, relocate and change their names, and give up their children for their safety (any mother’s heartbreak). As with the other seasons, the wives are involved, but often kept in the dark as their husbands serve their country.
The wives are Molly Blane (Regina Taylor), Kim Brown (Audrey Marie Anderson), and Tiffy Gerhardt (Abby Brammell). Season 4 introduces a love interest for Charlie Grey, the billionaire heiress Joss (Bre Blair), who might or might not become a wife of the elusive unit wives’ club (you will have to watch and see their romance play out). This is the final season, so Joss and Charlie’s story is cut a bit short.
The conflicts are played out: the Gerhardts settle their domestic disputes, and Mack finds out that Tiffy has had an affair with Thomas Ryan. Also, The Unit has to deal with the death of Hector.
The strength of the show and The Unit lies in Dennis Haybert’s portrayal of Jonas Blane. He is the leader of The Unit and can bark order after order and there is no question in your mind that he is doing the right thing. Backing up Haybert is his wife, Molly. Together the two make a formidable couple.
Anderson’s character Kim Brown sums it up at the end, saying she always looked to Molly and Jonas, that if they could survive, then everyone else could, too.
And there are many conflicts to survive. We see them involved in global missions from rescuing Jonas’ daughter to busting an anthrax lab to delivering a bride to an Afghan tribe to tracking a Nazi war crime to busting a sex slave ring. And those are just some of the conflicts that their global missions bring.
On the home front, the wives deal with relocation and name changes, and Kim’s children are taken from her. Kim deals with the loss of her children, and Tiffy deals with her teenage daughter as she takes on a new identity of being a school teacher.
Molly is suspicious of Grey’s girlfriend, Joss, and we see her attitude changing as she deals with the ruthlessness of Thomas Ryan. Toward the end of the season, Molly is kidnapped, which involves the plot twist of the newest member, Sam McBride.
The end of the season, and ultimately the show, ends with a question mark for Molly and Jonas. Jonas shows what he is made of as he strives to save Washington DC from a nuclear attack.
The season is a real treat for fans, action packed with solid acting and good writing. Fans will be sad to see the end coming, as The Unit has been one of the better shows on television. Well worth watching and thoroughly entertaining, highly recommended.
