A truly funny film is always a pleasure to watch, and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is a top pick for humorous relationship movies. Everyone relates to the goofy things one does when in love, but this film raises the insanity to the level of a fine art.
Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey are vibrant and hilarious as each tries to accomplish a goal, but at what cost?
Andie Anderson (Kate Hudson) is a writer for an upscale fashion magazine. She would rather be writing about political issues or sociological analyses, the fare given a serious journalist. She has the education credentials, but breaking into serious journalism is difficult, and so she is “paying her dues” by writing how to articles for Composure Magazine.
After watching a friend and colleague go through a rapid romance and break up, Andie agrees to write a first hand account of how to get everything wrong in a relationship, or in other words How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. It should be an easy prospect, but Andie has not considered that the guy might turn out to be a keeper.
The guy is advertising executive and eligible bachelor Benjamin Barry (Matthew McConaughey) who is on a mission of his own. He has a bet that he can make any woman fall in love with him in just 10 days, and the prize will be a lucrative advertising project.
Men already think women go nuts when they fall in love, and Andie’s over the top behavior seems to verify the craziness of romance. Benjamin is reeling, wondering what happened to the girl that he first was attracted to, and why has she turned into a gushing idiot? Andie cannot believe that Benjamin takes all her quirks and keeps on coming back.
Everyone who sees this movie has their favorite scene or sabatoge tactic used by Andie. I am personally fond of the “love-fern” a “baby plant to symbolize our baby relationship, and as it grows and flourishes, it will represent our growing love.” Euuuuuuuw!
Other friends say they love the “Family Album of Our Future Together, with photoshopped pictures of our children,” or the whole “Princess Sophia” debate as the best worst relationship moves ever. Guys I know even think this film is something special and very very funny!
The Deluxe Edition of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is presented on single disc, widescreen format with a running time of 115 minutes. The film is enhanced by a whole new group of special features. The cardboard slip cover for the case is decorated with stills from the film and has the top ten ways to lose a guy well illustrated.
Inside we have “How to Make a Movie in 2 Years” featurette, an analysis “Why the Sexes Battle” in other words, why men and women look at things differently, “Girls Night Out” featurette, a film commentary by Director Donald Petrie, Deleted Scenes also available with Donald Petrie’s commentary, and the Music Video “Somebody Like You” by Keith Urban. It is a great package for a funny film, and belongs in every collection. It is rated PG-13.
