My colleague Jeff, knowing that I am a fan of all things Stargate, graciously gave me the opportunity to write the review for this new Blu-Ray! Fans of the series were asked to choose their favorite episodes for this Blu-ray, and in addition were given the chance to submit artwork for the cover.
The voting complete, and the submissions judged, the Blu-ray consists of the feature length episode introducing the Stargate Atlantis universe “Rising” and an extended version of the series finale “Enemy at the Gate.”
The cover art competition was won by William Johnson with a design using a portion of a Stargate and representative constellations. All in all, it is a nice tribute to the series with the beginning and ending presented in brilliant high-definition.
The only thing one could wish for are some featurettes or making of segments to enhance the episodes.
“Rising” was the crossover episode taking Scientists from SG-1 and sending them through the stargate to the newly discovered ancient city of Atlantis. They are not only faced with the task of identifying and understanding the alien technology, settling in to the unfamiliar setting, but also they soon have to face a violent enemy for both the city and the indigenous people of the star system.
“Enemy at the Gate” has the Atlantis team after four years of battling the Wraith finally realizing that the only way to stop the enemy is to return Atlantis to Earth. If you are a fan of the series, this is a wonderful bracket of the story of Atlantis, and if you are not familiar with it, this is a great place to begin your journey.
Stargate Atlantis Fan’s Choice is presented on single disc in widescreen format, high definition. “Rising” has a running time of 88 minutes, and is available in English, French and Spanish audio, with subtitles available in Spanish and English for the hearing impaired.
“Enemy at the Gate” has a running time of 46 minutes and is available in English, French and Spanish audio and subtitles in Spanish and in English for the hearing impaired. Fans will be impressed with the clarity of the picture, bringing you right into the action.
The environs of Atlantis seem more real, have more depth and distinction in this Blu-ray format.
While the first and last episodes are good choices for the first venture into high-definition Blu ray, I’m sure I’m not the only fan who would like to see additional episodes given this special treatment.
