A great treat for all Stargate fans comes in this updated cut of the pilot episode for SG-1. It has been remastered, recut, reimagined and is beautiful in production and rich in specials. This DVD is a must for all Stargate collectors.
Not often does a television pilot for a series get such loving treatment, and fans should be amazed and pleased with the results. Series co-creator Brad Wright has taken the original and put in to place ideas that he has had throughout the series to enhance and reimagine the beginning episode.
Visuals are more exciting and in keeping with the final episodes of the series, the sound effects are bigger, and even some of the dialog has been looped to create a stronger sense of character. If you know the series you are going to love this final cut, if you have never seen SG-1, this will be an excellent introduction to the series.
The basic plot of the pilot is set more than a year after the end of the movie Stargate. Jack O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) is called back into duty when the Stargate suddenly becomes active and a new Goa’uld brings death and destruction to the base.
Jack following the orders of General Hammond (Don S. Davis) must lead a new team including some old friends from the first expedition and Capt. Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) to see if the Goa’uld have returned to Abydos and pose a threat to Earth. Stargate SG-1 Children of the Gods Final Cut is presented on single disc, widescreen format. Running time for the feature is 92 minutes, and it is available in English and French audio with English, Spanish and Portugese subtitles.
Along with the careful rediting and enhancements, this DVD is made rich by the numerous special features. There are never viewed scenes in the new cut, there are new and enhanced visual effect, Revoiced performance by Christopher Judge, the orginal score by Joel Goldsmith, a Back to the Beginning featurette that explores many of the efforts and actions involved in re-creating this episode, and finally a film commentary with Brad Wright and Richard Dean Anderson.
This is perhaps the most entertaining commentary, as it contains all the input of the years of the series, as well as the elements of its initial showing. Richard Dean Anderson is by turns ironic and hilarious, and Brad Wright exposes the genius moves that both production crew and actors made during filming.
Obviously these two have quite a history, and get along well, so it is the type of commentary that is informative as well as a lot of fun! If you collect Stargate, this is one that you simply MUST HAVE, and if you are interested in beginning this series, this DVD is the first one to watch.
